Professional Game Developers use Managed DirectX?

Check out the video that David Weller did with Steve Lacey, the graphics lead for Flight Simulator.

About 3/4 through the video his comments:

"The Managed DirectX stuff these days is a great starting point, and for a lot of people a great finishing point as well for shipping titles."

and

"We internally in the flight sim team use Manage DirectX in a lot of our tools"

Always nice to see the professionals enjoying our stuff.  Now just wait until they see the upcoming Whidbey stuff. =)

You guys keep talking about the Whidbey stuff, I can't wait to see what we're in for!

The move actually makes sense.

Games are usually all about performance and you would think that would mean no managed code.

However, games are also all about graphics and graphic performance is increasingly not determined by the processor but by the graphics chip. It is offloaded.

So as far as graphics programming is concerned, the performance difference between managed and unmanaged code is probably minimal.

If necessary, really intense logic can always be done as a native COM component.

Tom, slightly off topic, but have you considered putting together an Application Block for MDX? I think it would fit really well with the other Application Blocks. And your future books on MDX could use it. =)

It would be really nice to see an Application Block for MDX. Would make things much easier to work with. Has it been ever considered?
