You can make up your own beats for the songs that ship with the game, so they have the ability."

The songs that come with the game most likely already include beatmapping information (about the actual rhythm of the music). If you were able to upload your own songs into the game, there would have to be some mechanism that lets you beatmap the song, which is a more complex (and less fun) process than people might think.

But yes, these games are love. :) Don't forget to try EyeToy Groove and possibly Amplitude (both on the PS2) as well. They're love!

Everybody's waiting for you!

DDR is like crack for me. Been playing it now for about a year and a half. I have all of the US PS2 versions and the Xbox version. I can do most 6 and 7 footers, but don't do very well beyond that.

What's really fun is to go play at the arcade. Anyone over the age of 30 that can play appears to be some kind of freak of nature to the kids who hang out at these machines. Some chubby little 14-year old kid said to my wife and I, "You guys aren't your typical teenagers, are you?"

Loved your book, by the way.

re: It's a revolution...

27 here. It's one of my exersize routines and it's improved my asthma! Fancy that from a game. I'm playing 9 footers, some 10 footers, and trying to break into flashing-10 footers. I think I'm hitting some physical limits rather than mental limits at this point.

If you're stuck getting better, its probably because your pads suck. If you're buying them in the store, that's why. The $25 BNS pads around the web are _insanely_ better than that overpriced junk in the store. I don't know anything about adapting them to Xbox, but it's supposed to be possible.

Also be sure to mount your pad to plywood and keep it flat, you'd be amazed how much that helps even the lamest pad in both accuracy and life.

If you can manage getting it, DDR Extreme on Japanese PS2 is currently king. Excellent, eclectic track list and 110 songs! There's a DDR Extreme coming to USA PS2 this fall and hopefully the track list is just as strong.

re: It's a revolution...

My pads aren't an issue. I have a variety of ignition-style pads. The only barrier I have is that I don't play enough. I get into phases where I play and then I don't for awhile. I'm too damn out of shape to begin with, so it always takes a week or so of straight playing to get to a point where I can do DXY without passing out. My eyes follow no problem, I just can't keep up with the stamina.

I toyed with the idea of buying a Cobalt Flux pad, but my wife isn't going to allow that expense. On the other hand, we've been flirting with the idea of getting a full-sized arcade machine. :)

re: It's a revolution...

I still think sticking with soft pads are the way to go. Anything you buy is going to wear down, might as well buy lower and mod them... you never know if 6 months later you'll suddenly be sick of the whole game ;D

It also turns out a lot cheaper when you move on to... DOUBLES MODE! Playing doubles can be a good way to get better at singles mode, too.. its a lot more complicated and since you have to move your center of gravity around a lot more it's more of a workout. Moving back to singles, you'll feel lighter.

Yah, DXY is a BASTARD of a set of steps to begin with, those jump-step patterns are always annoying. See also: Waka Laka and Stoic. Urf. After AAing these guys, I never touch them again. (Although I love Stoic in beatmania IIDX!)

DDR was the catalyst for me being better to myself... starting to eat better, and also do some weight training. My health is improved across the board (weight, asthma, diabetes, blood pressure), it's great. I guess I was a wreck before. Who'd have expected this from a _video game_ (seeing as video games are a reason for why I was a wreck in the first place ;D). I'm still not where I want to be yet, though.

re: It's a revolution...

I'm trying to make that transition at well. I'm only 30, but I know what I do with my body ain't right. It's even more obvious since my wife went vegetarian.

I love doubles. It floors me how the kiddies in the arcades can't do it. I have no problem hitting most doubles in standard mode, yet you look like a hero in public. I haven't done a ton of heavy doubles because, as with singles, it looks less like "dancing" and more like button mashing.

It's a revolution! :)

It's a revolution! :)

Dancing with my XBox

Thanks for pushing me over the edge!
