I recently presented a Tele Track for Westcon Group alongside Charles Van Heusen, Partner Technology Advisor – Microsoft. The session is now recorded and posted below.
How Microsoft and Westcon’s Unified Communications Solutions Deliver You Net New Business - June 16, 2009 (Archive Tele Track) - Westcon Microsoft
I recently took my MCP exam for Volume Licensing 70-671, while registering I came across the Second Shot Offer. It took me a whole minute or two to register for it. Luckily I didn’t need it this time, but that doesn’t mean I won’t in the future.
If you are planning to take an MCP exam you should register for Second Shot, just in case you need a… um… well a Second Shot.
Microsoft Learning: Microsoft Second Shot Offer
Plus, for only $35 you’ll receive a Microsoft E-Learning Collection.
Normally priced up to US$350, these e-learning collections are just US$35 when you register for Second Shot. Limit one per customer.
I often have conversations with Resellers that may be Cisco, HP or IBM Partners (or a host of other vendors) and want to know how to get started with MSFT. I decided to put together some helpful links and information to help you do just that.
The first step is to register with Microsoft as a Partner. It is free and only takes a few minutes. go to: partner.microsoft.com You will find a wealth of information geared towards you. Sales & Marketing information, Licensing, Events, Support, Newsletters and more.
An area I would focus on next would be earning a competency. There are many to pick from depending on your business model, your customer base and your technical expertise on staff. Becoming an MCP will give you more visibility and allow you many additional benefits within the Partner Program.
Some other hot areas to look at are:
Microsoft Action Pack Subscription (MAPS)

BPOS – Hosted Model

SBSC & Small Biz Community:
http://mssmallbiz.com
Live Events:

SharePoint User Group

There is a lot more, but this is a good start. If you would like to learn more feel free to post a comment and will provide more tips and useful information.
Thank you for reading and have a great day!!

I recently challenged myself to pass the exam and successfully passed it on the first try. If you are interested in adding a competency to your Partner status I recommend the below Volume Licensing competency. You will need two people to pass either of the two exams.
- Exam 70-671: Designing and Providing Microsoft Volume Licensing Solutions to Small and Medium Organizations
- Exam 70-672: Designing and Providing Microsoft Volume Licensing Solutions to Large Organization

Are you using the new Microsoft LicenseWise configurator?
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/licensewise/default.aspx?ref=1
If so, what do you think of it?
I'm just getting used to it and find it a bit different from the MS Gear-Up configurator.. I think it is fairly easy and intuitive to use. I also like the drop down menu's to select what I want. I'm not finding the SA benefits as easliy as before. I may need to spend some more time with it. But I like the nice chart you received before that laid out all the benefits for that specific quote.
I welcome your comments if you would like to share some tips and tricks. I will be happy to publish them for others to see.
Thanks
I'm a 13 year veteran of the IT Channel and have experience with Licensing going back into the 1990's. I have been working with Partners to understand Volume Licensing options through training seminars that date back to paper licenses. I was first a sit in for the MOLP (Microsoft Open License Program) Desk at Ingram Micro, transacting hundreds of PO's and learning about Points and Pools. In the late 90's moved to the Corel Licensing Desk as a Corel Licensing Specialist for the CLP, Freedom and Universal Programs at Ingram Micro. I worked very closely with Corel and Partners selling Corel Licensing Solutions for end users.
I then became the Licensing Development Specialist at Ingram regularly training Partners' sales force on site. The top vendors at that time were Microsoft, IBM, Adobe and Symantec. Partners I trained include, More Direct, Boise Office Products, Micro Warehouse, Software Plus, Software One and numerous others. My experience with developing licensing training and my knowledge of licensing programs lead me to the role of Microsoft Market Development Manager at Ingram Micro in 2005. I designed the Microsoft Licensing Boot Camp series that is still being used today to educate Partners on the variety of Microsoft Open License Programs, how to sell them and how to transact through a Distributor.
In 2007 I was hired by Microsoft as a Partner Technology Specialist on the MSAM team. I continued licensing training by co-presenting with Disti's to their Partners at the Licensing Boot Camp seminars. I also presented at TS2 and Dynamics events on other Microsoft solutions, building my technical and product knowledge. Later in 2009 I was offered an opportunity to onboard Microsoft with a new Distributor, Westcon Group. They are the first Distributor to be authorized by Microsoft in 7 years. I was brought on to train their sales team and educate their Partner base on the integration of Microsoft into complimentary solutions, including Cisco, Nortel, Avaya and Polycom. As well as share my expertise with the operations, marketing and technical services teams.
My passion is Microsoft and I love technology. I even enjoy testing the latest products in my home office environment. My mission is to share my passion with you and I enjoy meeting Partners in the field with the same passion.
