ASP.NET MVC P5 makes VS crash if the SP1 is installed.

It happens when opening a view for editing.

The cause seems to be some 3rd party components: i read issues with TFS power toys, infragistcs toolbar, VS powercommand and so on

1) App_Browsers/default.browser issues when Frontpage _vti_bin folders exist.

2) Couple of older 3rd party applications didn't handle the upgrade well.

3) The install went flawless using a SMS package.

On one machine where we installed .Net 3.5 SP1, we suddenly got a very nasty exception on several ASP.Net 2.0 applications:

System.AccessViolationException: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.

It occurs on different applications, and with different call stacks, but not easy/consistently reproducible (and only on that specific machine).

This exception seems to be related to the changes in .Net 2.0 that ship with 3.5 SP1. After restoring the system to the previous situation (uninstalling 3.5 SP1 and related), everything works as before.

very annoying...

1) Install went fine, though for my machine, it got installed went I went to install SQL Server 2008 from the demo ISO on launch day, so its probably not the typical experience (3.5 SP1 wasn't even officially out...so it was quite the surprise!)

2)All my applications run fine, though I've heard of some people who had issues with SQL Server Management Studio 2005 (but 2008 ran fine), most of which were fixed with a repair install. There's also a list of bugs for obscure scenarios that have hit certain sites like infoq... Not gonna affect standard apps, and didn't affect my own.

3)Nope, all is peachy.

4)Impression is that SP1 could have been .NET 4.0 :) There's so much... though it seems a bit like you guys went out with more than you can chew... lots of new stuff, but many of it doesn't seem like its quite complete (for example, the Dynamic Data for Entities template doesn't work with many tables of Adventure Works 2005... one would expect at LEAST the demo database to work, since its the first thing many of us will try :)).

I know there's a lot of plans for .NET 4.0, but personally, I think its time for Microsoft to have a feature-less release. Just improve and complete whats already there, overhaul some things you didn't touch in a while (like integrating nullable more), break some backward compatibility with a good tool to analyse and help upgrade application... its time now. .NET used not to have all the features to be taken seriously by heavy enterprise scenarios, but now it does. So stop adding, and just take one release to fix and improve.

Of course, I know it won't happen, but I can be wishful, eh?

After installing SP1, I have not been able to add new controls to the toolbox.

I tried doing that myself and it works fine for me. Sounds like something didn't get installed completely correct. You may need to try to contact Microsoft support to see what isn't installed right.

As to your actual query about SP1. When I installed, I could not run my ASP.net 2.0 windows app in VS2008. The web server would crash with "Unable to connect to the ASP.NET Development Server", but it went away when I rebooted.

I couldnt install on one of my PCs, because of a missing/corrupt office 2007 update file. I re-install office 2007 and all updates, nothing changed.

On my laptop everything works fine except asp.net 3.5 extensions projects. (System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.6.0.0).

One more; some 3rd party components render incorrectly in design mode. (like obout flyout). It says one of the properties has invalid value, even if its enumed, and its correct, works fine before. So I dont think its a component related problem.

I installed VS 2008 and SP1 on a brand new computer for a new co-worker that started working at my company this monday. The install went flawless. I imported all necessary projects from Source Safe and I got it to compile and run perfectly.

BUT when the new guy arrived we obviously started working with the actual files, and as soon as he opened a aspx- or a ascx-file VS said "Initializing toolbox" for a couple of seconds and then it went down without even displaying a message.

All info I got was from the log where it says this:

Any idea what this might be?

It seemed to occur rather randomly with different call stacks.

We've tried to uninstall the different parts (3.5 SP1, 3.0 SP2, 2.0 SP2) step by step, and the problem went away as soon as we reverted back to 2.0 SP1. Installing just 2.0 SP2 re-introduced the problem.

Once this exception has happened, it keeps re-occuring for some time (I presume until the session expires, but that's just a guess).

The only problem I have seen, which may not be 3.5 sp1 related, is that visual web developer some times forgets to delete the app_offline.htm after building.

I never had that problem before the sp1 update, but maybe it it just the web app I have been making.

Another thing you can do is try to reset the toolbox back to the default and then try adding things again. My guess is that it is some custom toolbox item.

i thought .net 3.5 sp1 was giving me problems (only because that was the only major thing i could remember i'd installed lately), but couldn't really put my finger on it.

i just figured it out today, and happened to remember your post, so thought i'd try to help others out.

it's much clearer to me in retrospect: i installed sp1 and some web sites stopped working properly (wowhead.com, for one ;) and anything silverlight kept prompting me to install, even though i already have v2). also, the help in vStudio .net 2003 lost all it's styling - just plain, ugly text. i also started having a problem in asp.net 1.1 - browser detection was coming back with 'unknown' for my ie browser, normal for ff and safari.

but suffice to say that ie (v7, in my case, not sure if other versions have this problem) was generating a user agent string that's too long - 260+ characters screws up navigator.userAgent in javascript and over 256 characters messes up browserCaps regexes in asp.net 1.1.

my own work-around, for the time being, was to delete some of the .net clr keys from

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\Post Platform

.net 3.5 sp1 put me up to 8 clr versions - i deleted 2 old 3.0.04506.* revisions and am now down to 6, which, along with my media center, officelive, infopath, etc., etc., entries, puts me under the user agent string limits.

Users see the problem when using Outlook 2007. OutOfOffice assistant does not work.

Schedule meetings with other users will make Outlook crash.

All works fine with OWA and previous versions of Outlook.

All this started right after installation of .NET 3.5sp1.

Uninstall did not solve the problems. Microsoft is working on the issue for the second week now.

In my opinion, the SP introduced _way_ too many issues - including a few hard bugs; that's very uncommon, especially with service packs from Microsoft.

I have a bug with VS2008 SP1 that I discovered yesterday when trying to debug an application with 7 projects. It has to do with the new Debugging feature of "Enable .NET Framework source stepping" under Tools | Optons.

VS2008 SP1 will crash if I have this solution open, check 'Enable .NET Framework source stepping', and then click OK. The result of the bug generates:

3. I have only http://referencesource.microsoft.com/symbols and have deleted all of the cached symbols that the SymbolServer previously used.

4. I think it has to do with a particular project type - but rooted in the .NET references it requires and uses.

More to come as I narrow it down and will post a link to the MS Connect Bug ID...

it seems that the System.AccessViolationException that I was looking at for JeroenH was caused by using the Remotesoft .NET Protector. This is a known issue with it. So the only ways to fix it are to not use that or to talk to Remotesoft about fixing the problem. If anyone is not using that and has the System.AccessViolationException issue, please let me know.

I am having an issue with a site that uses AspDotNetStoreFront. I am getting the System.AccessViolationException exception. I will check tonight if the store is using remotesoft and if they are not I will see if I can get a dump to send to you.

I had a huge issue with TFS once I installed .Net 3.5 SP1 and attempted an upgrade to TFS2008 from TFS2005. I wound up having to get Premier involved (case # SRZ080913000002). We took the approach of uninstalling .Net 3, .Net 3.5, and .Net 2.0 and reinstalling .Net 2.0.

I find it absolutely insane that the install of .Net 3.5 Sp1 includes a bundle for .Net 2.0 SP2 and that install winds up uninstalling 2.0 and 2.0 SP1 . Too much risk for a SP install on a production web server or code server.

Like JeroenH and kamii47 I have a System.AccessViolationException.

It occurred just after I installed the new .Framework 3.5 SP1.

The strange thing about that is that it occurs only

on the Release build.

To be more precise, I have a c# .Net project which builds dynamically dlls using some IL instructions.

I may test a build dll by referencing them manualy in the project and calling the differents methods within it in a console application project.

The test runs ok in Debug but not in Release.

I have all ok on servers that are still on the Framework 2.0

The bug occured just after the FWRK 3.5 SP1 installation.

Dear Sir,

In a precedent post you said "If anyone is not using that and has the System.AccessViolationException issue, please let me know".

I also have a System.AccessViolationException since .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 installation on an application that ran perfectly well before the installation.

The application generate a dynamic assembly, generated on the fly, that run as a database mapping layer.

Here is an extract of the logs :

DynamicFactory\bin\Release>DynamicFactoryTester.exe

System.AccessViolationException: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.

at __generated__1_reader(Object , IDataReader , Dictionary`2 , Boolean )

at com.dynamic.factory.SingleRowFactory.CreateList[T,TKey,TValue](IDataReader reader, Boolean getAllItems, Dictionary`2 parameters)

The "__generated__1_reader" method is build dynamically, as I said earlier : it does not exist before the program starts.

The strange thing is that the exception is thrown only in Release configuration.

This seems to be a security issue, but I don't know what to do.

Everything worked great, before I had to install .NET 3.5 SP1 on a web server for a client, that is.

Now I get a stupid error:

".NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.3053 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (7A097706) (80131506)" and nothing works.

This comes in sync with a second error:

"Faulting application w3wp.exe, version 6.0.3790.3959, stamp 45d6968e, faulting module mscorwks.dll, version 2.0.50727.3053, stamp 4889dc18, debug? 0, fault address 0x000170d8."

that kills IIS worker process and there goes my website...

I should have figured that Microsoft is up to no good.

Well Microsoft Net Framework 3.5 SP1 just crashed on me. My web site is down.. My application Event logs on Windows 2003 R2 Standard says the framework is the problem.

So I'm trying to find a solution to this problem

I keep getting a similar error, except that the faulting module is kernel32.dll. This happens on a 64-bit Windows 2003 Server with .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installed.

Here's what goes into the Application Event Log:

Faulting application w3wp.exe, version 6.0.3790.3959, stamp 45d6968e, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 5.2.3790.4062, stamp 4626467c

It worked fine on my 32-bit Windows XP development machine (with .NET 3.5 SP1 installed) but after uploading to the demo server to show it to some clients, it turned out that it crashes the IIS worker process at some point.

Can you give more details on the problem? If you really need to figure it out, it may be best to open up a support case with Microsoft.

It will probably be best to capture a dump at the time of the crash. Are you using anything from Remotesoft?

I had the AccessViolation exception on a production web server running multiple sites. Mostly on the AspDotNetStoreFront sites. Some of the other sites was throwing random errors, can't remember any of them, but those sites were all .net 2.0 sites.

I went to uninstall 3.5 sp1 and it trashed all of the .net installs. I couldn't uninstall or re-install any of them.

I ended up going through the registry, removing anything related to .net, removed the c:\windows\microsoft .net\framework folders.

And then I was able to re-install .net 1.1 following a microsoft kb on how to re-install.net 1.1 on a 2003 server, and then installed 2.0, then 2.0 sp1

Now all is well.

I'm trying to do some stuff with WPF in VS2008 using the new SP1 of .Net 3.5. It's practically hopeless, the VS2008 IDE disappears regularly, leaving the following message in the Windows Event Log:

.NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.3053 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (7A2E0F92) (0)

There are numerous accounts of other people having this problem on the internet, but no conclusive explanation of the problem or how to get rid of it. Different things work for different people, but nothing has worked for me so far. If you can offer any assistance, then that'd be great

Are you using anything from Remotesoft? If not, the best advice I can offer is to call Microsoft support. They should be able to get it resolved and get you running again.

No, I'm not running anything from Remotesoft.

I ended up searching some more forums, and concluded that the best plan was to repair the installation of VS2008, reinstall VS2008 SP1 and install the latest Service Pack for SQL Server 2005.

There's a chance that this has helped things, but it's a bit early to know for sure,

We're also getting accessviolationexceptions all over the place since the beginning of November in our .net 2 windows forms project (running on about 25 workstations - most seem to get the error two or three times a day). We can't consistently reproduce and it's never happened on our development machines (Visual Studio 2005)

At the same time we've also started getting a lot of Fatal Execution Engine errors (example: .NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.1433 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (79FFEE24) (80131506)) where our app bombs out and the above error is written to the Application Log.

I have a couple of stack traces taken just after the error that I can send if they would be of any help.

win2k3 sp2, I also have vs6.0 and vs 2005 with sp1 installed

vs2005 now fails with the same error as vs2008

I ran into some problems before installing vs2008 with office 2007 which had all components/products with version 12.0.4518.1014

after i succeeded in installing vs2008, one of the components/products which was failing the install now has version 12.0.4518.1066 (from the vs2008 i guess)

problably you didn't need this since it problably is a .net issue, i don't know

Seem to have a pathological case that leads to the IDE crash and the following entries in the event log (after trying to attach to w3wp.exe)

The repro is to use a solution file from a directory two levels up from a web application project that it includes. (You only need one project in the sln file.) Then try to attach to the w3wp process manually for debugging. In my case after about 5-8 seconds this crashes the IDE, logs events and ultimately crashes the w3wp process as well.

I initially ran into the problem after installing vs2008 sp1. However, rolling the SP back did not resolve the issue. If anybody can shed some light on this or has a better work-around I'd love to hear about it.

The work-around is to use a solution file in the same folder with the web-application project.

Don't have any real idea why - but this was driving me nuts - hope it helps someone...

Just a follow-up. The issue described in my previous post was in fact not solution path related. It was finally cleared up by deleting the .suo file of the solution with the debugging issue and the logged error messages.

Installing .Net 3.5 SP1 or .Net 2.0 SP2 I get this exception: System.AccessViolationException: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. I'm generating dynamic assemblies, generated on the fly, using System.Emit. Is there any fix or workaround for this issue?

I held off installing 3.5 sp1 but eventually took the plunge, wish I had not. After install when my system rebooted the os started loading new personal/default settings ect. It did not delete anything but lots of desktop icons were gone and the desktop background was changed. Had to do a system restore.

Hi Tom, if the machine has .Net 2 SP2 or .Net 3.5 SP1, you can reproduce the error. I have a little solution (C# projects) where you can reproduce the exception in your machine. I will send the solution to you.

A client had .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 get installed on an auto update and now when the ASP.Net web site tries to do a post back is crashes their instance. There are no logs being written to indicate what the issue is and from a debugging window in VS it says the the Internet connectivity has been lost which it has not. Everything looks to me like the session state is corrupted. Very frustrating and I am not sure if can be resolved other than to remove SP1.

Removing SilverLight tools helped the issue with 'Choose Tool Box Item' Dialog
