In most cases it is fairly simple for vendors to address any incompatiblities between their code and IE7. For better or worse, now that IE7 has shipped it's *far* more practical for vendors to update their code than for IE7 to take to take a fix that does a workaround.

For compatibility testing, in addition

to our own test team, which can handle checking the core functionality for many of the top extensions and applications, we released numerous public betas to help in testing for compatibility issues. (Said betas were downloaded by millions of users, so it wasn't like they were in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying "Beware of the Leopard.") ;-)

IE7 Beta 1 was released to MSDN subscribers well over a year before release, and the widespread public beta was available around Jan/Feb 2006, around eight months prior to release.

We identified and worked-around a bunch of application and web site compatibility issues, and later we created the Upgrade Advisor for warning the user about catastrophic failures due to incompatible add-ons we weren't able to work around. It would have been nice if we had a more complete (or server-based) list of incompatible extensions, but there's never enough time to do *everything* you want.

That said, in cases where extensions are in compatible, our efforts to maximize compatibility should help developers quickly update their extensions so they work as reliably with IE7 as they did with IE6.
