FTTP: Fiber to the premises
Verizon has been laying fiber in my neighborhood in preparation for their FIOS rollout here. The first week was filled with subcontractors identifying the various buried utilities. After marking Gas, Electric, Sewage, Cable, Water and Phone lines the streets and front yards of most people look like a rainbow colored spider web. I don’t there is a physical way to lay a straight cable run without crossing at least 2 additional utilities. On Friday they apparently hit a gas main and as a precaution shut down power to the neighborhood for 5 hours while about 10 people stood around watching one person in a hole fix the problem ( I guess they were PM’s). I suppose this is the price you pay for technology.
It’s worth noting that if FIOS was actually ready, and your phone had been switched over to it, the UPS wouldn’t have lasted through the outage, knocking out phone service as well. Even so, I plan on signing up immediately because bandwidth is much more important to me than land line service.
