Text Editor Tip - Visual Studio 2005

Email Received: I am starting to play with Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 and really like it. I have found some of the really cool things that it can do and appreciate the information that you have posted. Don’t think this would make a good video – but I can’t seem to figure it out. What is with the green and yellow lines in the border of the text editor?

Answer:

Actually, it’s one of the new text editor features within Visual Studio 2005. It provides the ability to determine what code has been saved and what hasn’t. Take a look at the following screenshot.

You can see a green and yellow set of lines on the border of the text editor. A yellow bar in the margin indicates that the edited line is not yet saved. A Green bar indicates that the line was saved.

The ability to track these changes is controlled based on the user’s preferences. The highlighting feature can be turned off by deselecting “Track Changes” in General Text Editor Options as shown below.

Once turned off the editor then doesn’t show the changes as shown below.

I could be wrong, but I noticed a performance difference coding in the text editor when I turned it off. Seemed to speed things up. Could just be my perception though.
