It's great that there is such a framework. It's a pity however, that it's completely useless, as no-one keeps the browsercaps updated. ASP.NET 2.0's browsercaps date from 2003, wich is ancient!

And no, with hundreds of mobile phones on the market, it's not an option to use emulators to test every single one of them yourself and create your own .browser files.

(Trust me, I know from experience.)

wow - I would have to disagree with you on that comment. The good part of the adaptive rendering process is really to help with that. Certainly haven't tested with every phone on the market but quite a few and didn't run across any major issues that I couldn't solve with the ASP.NET mobile controls.

Well, Thom, the problem is that most browsers on the market today are XHTML capable browsers. Which was rare in 2003. To my experience, the current browser definitions will not be so kind on these browsers. Sure, they'll display your contents, but the only way to get accurate information (like, say, screen dimensions), is to roll your own (or let someone else do that for you). And when you're supposed to create a mobile site for the general public, you really cannot rely on ASP.NET's information, and there is no way to check every single mobile web browser. Heck, not even WURFL can keep up, and that's WAY more up-to-date than ASP.NET has ever been.

As it stands, ASP.NET's mobile capabilities are truly a lowest common denominator framework. Unfortunately, most clients will not accept that.

Fortunately, though (and this redeems ASP.NET somewhat), you can provide your own browser detection handling and integrate this neatly into the ASP.NET pipeline. We've had to do this, and it works like a charm. It's a pity we even had to, but still, it works.

Rubenp you make a very good comment. We do a lot of wap development and we are finding the market is moving way more to the XHTML market.

We are just getting started on the ASP.NET mobile development and it is going good so far. What systems have you actually picked up with the browsers so far.

Would it be possible for you to post your browser detection handeling system. We do currently have one for WURFL but it would be interesting to see what others have done
