Surface SDK Workstation Edition now available for download!

At PDC this week, we announced the broad availability of the Microsoft Surface SDK Workstation Edition. Now anyone interested in developing collaborative, engaging massive multi-touch, multi-user experiences for Surface can easily access the software at no cost through surface.com.

The Surface hardware is needed to deploy an application, and many use the Surface Developer units to create and test their applications directly on the device. The SDK Workstation Edition lets you use a PC to develop and a PC based simulator to test applications using multiple mice and tag simulation tools.

To support the launch of the SDK on MSDN, we are transitioning away from our private Surface Community site and integrating into existing public Microsoft sites:

UK Imagine Cup – Calling all problem solvers!

What is the Imagine Cup?

The imagine cup is the world’s premier technology competition for students. In 2009, more than 300,000 students from 142 countries entered the competition making it a truly global event.

This is a chance for your students to really exercise what they have learnt in the classroom by putting it to use to solve real-world problems.

This year we are working with UK-based charities such as the Royal National Institute for the Blind, TearFund, and Leonard Cheshire Disability to produce broad project briefs for your students. This means that they’ll have the opportunity to address real issues which have an immediate impact on people’s day to day lives.

Why would my students be interested?

The Imagine Cup

allows students to apply classroom learning in a practical situation, stretching their problem solving and technical skills
is a great way to enhance a student’s CV, not only demonstrating their passion for technology but also demonstrating their grasp of current tools and technology
is an opportunity to win great prizes! In addition to prizes for the winning UK teams, there is the opportunity to compete against teams from around the world at the worldwide finals in Poland.

What do I tell my students?

We’ve prepared an email for you to send to your students. This contains all the information they need to get started, as well as links to the website for registering. Please distribute this to your students to give them an opportunity to participate.

I’m very excited to announce that Windows 7 RTM is now available for download in MSDNAA and ELMS!

The release for MSDNAA includes the following:

· Windows 7 (x86 and x64) Professional

· Windows 7 (x86 and x64) Enterprise (VL Edition for labs)

We have started the process of loading the Professional SKUs into MSDNAA (ELMS) and are tracking for a availability date of 8/13.

What are Microsoft Student Partners (MSPs)?

Microsoft Student Partners are some of the brightest, most innovative student technology enthusiasts who are currently studying at a university in the UK.

What is Microsoft Student Partner Programme?

The MSPs are part of a one year programme which is designed to help students get the most out of Microsoft tools and technologies. MSPs will work in partnership with Microsoft to reach out to technical students across the UK – helping at Microsoft events, running events on campus for students to attend, or contributing to the blogosphere or twitter chatter about the coolest technologies around. The MSP programme develops skills and gives students a head start in the ‘real world’ once they graduate and enter industry. It’s a great way for technology enthusiasts to become more engaged with the world of technology and MSPs have so many fantastic opportunities to develop their passion for technology.

What's involved?

MSPs will benefit from exclusive events and offers throughout the year and will have the chance to work closely with Microsoft throughout their time on the programme. MSPs will be involved in presentations and demonstrations of the latest technologies and develop their skills and interest areas through developing for fun. So basically it’s about having fun with your passion for technology!

How do I become an MSP?

The MSP Programme runs in parallel to the academic year and so the applications for the 2009 programme are now open ready for the launch of the programme in September 2009. All you have to do to apply for the MSP Programme09 (2010?) is make a simple video that lasts 1-2 minutes. Your video must start with the title ‘I’m an MSP and.....’ and proceed to tell us the following:

· Why you want to become an MSP.

· How passionate you are about technology

· What qualities you can bring to the programme

Please note that you will not be judged on the quality of the video alone- it’s what you have to say that we’re really interested in! All applications must be in by Friday 31^st July and should be uploaded to YouTube/ Vimeo/ MSN Video and send the link to UKMSP@microsoft.com

Silverlight Insight event for UK Academics

As Paolo blogged we (the Microsoft Academic Team in the UK) are arranging an event targeted to Academics in Universities and Design Schools in the UK.

Silverlight Insight is a one-day event designed to give attendees a solid understanding of the Silverlight 2 platform and of the Microsoft Expression Studio toolset. It is relevant to both developers and designers alike, and comprises tutor-led sessions and hands-on exercises.

Participants will also receive a copy of the Silverlight 2 curriculum which can be customised and adapted to individual teaching needs, as well as a copy of Silverlight 2 Bible by Brad Dayley.

Microsoft Azure Services Platform: Opening Up Cloud Computing

IT departments have long faced the problem of planning for and providing sufficient processing, storage, and network bandwidth to meet the needs of the busiest times on the calendar. Application developers have distributed processing between workstations and servers within a single enterprise but crossing enterprise boundaries has proven more difficult. End users have struggled to remember a different login ID for each service they use.

Microsoft® Azure™ Services Platform addresses these issues by moving computing "into the cloud." With the Azure Services Platform, processing and storage moves from individual corporate servers and websites to large Microsoft data centres.

With cloud computing, corporate processing, storage, and network capacity no longer must be scaled to meet the highest expected level of demand. Microsoft's data centres contain processing and storage resources sufficient to meet maximum levels of demand.

Cloud-based applications and storage make it easier to share data. Enterprises can make applications available to partners without requiring users to remember different login credentials for the services each partner provides. Because all partners access the same cloud resident data, changes made by one application are automatically available to all.

While applications that execute in the cloud must be designed for the Windows environment, non-Windows based applications can access services on the Azure Services Platform using industry standards. Applications communicate with the cloud using HTTP and SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), while services and data are identified and accessed using URIs (Uniform Resource Identifiers). Developers administer services on the Azure Services Platform via a browser-accessible portal.

Silverlight News

Silverlight Controls Source Code

The source code for the Silverlight 2 controls has now been released enabling you to download the code and modify the controls as you wish. Click here to access the download page.

Silverlight and Windows Live Essentials

Silverlight is now included in the installation package for Windows Live Essentials. Here is the list of software included:

MSN Messenger
Writer
Photo Gallery
Mail (desktop email client for those who don’t have Outlook)
Toolbar
Family Safety
Movie Maker (still in beta)

Silverlight and Linux

Work is progressing on the Moonlight project (the porting of Silverlight for the Linux platform). Since Moonlight 1 was released in Beta, Tim Heuer has published a screencast detailing his experiences of installing it.

MIX 09

The next MIX conference will happen in Las Vegas on March 18-20 and several sessions have already been announced, including quite a few around Silverlight 3.

Scott Guthrie has already announced several of the enhancements the team is working on and you can obtain further information from his blog.

Finally, the first beta version of Windows 7 has been released and while this is not strictly a Silverlight event, Silverlight runs great on it.

Developing the Future

I was listening to Science Friction on BBC Radio 4 last week and, particularly, the debates around blue skies research against directed research, where applied and practical solutions are envisaged. The discussion about research, ranged from how it is funded to the depletion of the number of industry labs available to take university projects on to mature products and services and also considered changes in government procurement.

Touching, as this does, on entrepreneurship and, in the light of the current economic climate, I thought you might like to look at the third edition of Developing the Future, a report commissioned by Microsoft. I have one hundred copies to give away to academics. As usual there are some regulations we have to adhere to, so please read the terms and conditions at the bottom of this entry carefully.

Imagine Cup for Schools

Information Technology Challenge

I’d like to tell you about the IT Challenge. As you may already know the Imagine Cup is the world’s premier student technology competition. It is one way Microsoft is encouraging young people to apply their imagination, their passion and their creativity to technology innovations that can make a difference in the world. Traditionally aimed at university students in the UK, Microsoft is encouraging secondary school students (over 16 years old) and college students to take part in the competition.

To support individual institutions, we are offering out prizes of Windows Vista Ultimate or Office 2007 Ultimate to the top student competitors in the IT Challenge Round One at your school or college.

The IT Challenge is a fun and engaging quiz based around general IT knowledge that aligns well to most IT courses or anyone who has an interest in IT. The quiz is held online at scheduled times throughout December and January and students would compete on the www.imaginecup.com site.

Terms and Conditions for Imagine Cup UK IT Challenge Invitational

ELIGIBILITY: This competition is open to any person resident in the United Kingdom who is 16 years of age or older at the time of entry and who is actively enrolled as a student at an accredited educational institute that grants a high-school or college/university (or equivalent) degrees at any time between January 1st 2008 and May 31st 2009. Employees or interns of Microsoft or its affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising or promotion agencies are not eligible, nor are members of these employees’ families (defined as parents, children, siblings, spouse and life partners).
TO ENTER: Entry into this competition may only be made by persons who have entered into the corresponding Microsoft Global Imagine Cup 2009 Invitational (the “Global Invitational”). Entry into the Global Invitational can be made by visiting www.imaginecup.com and terms and conditions applicable to the Global Invitation will apply. Once registered for the Global Invitational individuals who have registered as being UK entrants will automatically be entered into this UK invitational competition (the “UK Invitational”) and shall be deemed to have accepted these terms and conditions.
