ISSUE : SMTP Configuration - Unspecified Error

A new SMTP related issue has been brought to our notice and we are currently working on fixing it. This post provides information about an issue under investigation and is subject to change.

SYMPTOMS

When you make changes to the properties of a SMTP Virtual Server under the Access tab you get the following message :

SMTP Configuration - Unspecified Error

err

The problem is likely to occur when you have the HOTFIX 946517 on the server. The HOTFIX 946517 updates the Adsiis.dll to fix a thread contention issue seen when you run MOSS 2007 Timer Service.

Currently if you are running SMTP on a server with MOSS 2007 you will have to uninstall the HOTFIX 946517 to get your SMTP working. Note that the SMTP service it self is not affected by this HOTFIX and keeps running. But you cannot make changes like Relay restrictions. A fix for this problem will be made available shortly in the form of a HOTFIX and published as KB 950426

I received the HOTFIX by calling MS Support and installed, and still the same problem. I rebooted server. Uninstalled SMTP, reinstalled, etc. Still, no luck.

Is anyone addressing this? Any other ideas or HOTFIXES?

Hi, do you know if there is any way to edit the smtp access settings through either the metabase or registry. When we installed the hotfix 946517 it pretty much ruined our moss install and we had to set things up again so theres no way we're going to uninstall it, setup smtp and reinstall it.

did you attempt to uninstall this kb 946517 from your moss sever? what was the outcome? or was your moss server ruined from the install? I have this installed and working in my farm but I need to try to remove it. I want to know if you tried to remove it and experienced any problems with the removal. or if you were never able to successfully install in the first place. thanks!
