Exhibition organiser sticks to Microsoft technology

Robert Jaques, vnunet.com 10 Aug 2004

The website for last week's LinuxWorld 2004 in San Francisco was powered by Windows Server 2003, according to internet monitoring firm Netcraft.

The US event was designed to celebrate the best Linux applications and advance the cause of the open source operating system for businesses - but failed to use the platform itself.

Further research by Netcraft poster Rich Miller found that Linux enthusiasts are not alone in finding their 'World' running on Microsoft software: the website for the Macworld Conference & Expo is also hosted on Windows Server 2003.

The explanation for these technological contradictions is, according to Miller, that show organiser International Data Group (IDG) runs its main website on Windows 2000, while its trade show unit is hosted on Windows NT4.

"In fairness to IDG, it's hardly the only trade show operator that doesn't tailor its hosting for OS-specific events," said Miller in a posting.

He added that the website for the Wall Street on Linux show also runs on Windows Server 2003, as does the site for the Real World Linux 2004 Conference & Expo.

Ross: Not really that shocking. Akamai runs on linux... it's pretty public knowledge :-)

I know, thought I'd just remind ya ;)

To be honest I dislike the "Look our competitor uses our product" statements a lot, regardless of which side it comes from >:)

Way to go, Vince -- you've dragged yourself down to Slashdot levels. Nice to see a bit of immaturity on MSDN blogs from time to time...

But I've got a question for you: do you think Microsoft should reject a trade show operator solely because that operator's site uses Linux? Personally, I think that would be pretty stupid. Why should LinuxWorld be any different?

Agreed.

This was a good and important article. These conferences are always looking for ways to pinch pennies (just like business). For them to choose Windows server products over open-source, especially at their very own conference, shows just what the commitment level is to their own product. They obviously spent more for this setup, so one can only assume they wanted the better security and ease of roll-out afforded by Windows server products. Ken.

ouyaahhhh,

My intention was not to start a big polemic on this subject (sorry if I've shocked some people)

It was JUST funny to see that....
