Using virtual machines to run System Center Virtual Machine Manager

A number of people have commented to me on the rather steep requirements to run Beta 1 of System Center Virtual Machine Manager.  And I have to agree - with the requirement of:

  • Domain joined 32-bit Windows Server 2003 R2
  • PowerShell RC1
  • Net 3.0
  • WS Management

Now pretty much all of my domain joined servers are 64-bit, but there is a simple solution.  Install SCVMM inside of a virtual machine.  Luckily SCVMM seems to have no problems with managing the version of Virtual Server that it is running inside of.

Well, I tried just that installing in a Virtual machine runs fine.

Unfortunately I can't seem to add 64bit hosts.
I am running A virtual server 2005 R2 sp1 beta on an AMD 64 which has a Windows 2003 r2 OS.

Each time I try add this host it fails with error 407.

Have you guys done any performance studies for Biztalk 2006 on Virtual PCs + Core Duo processors? In other words would you see a major bump in performance with core duo

I think you mean 64-bit guests.  You can add 64-bit guests under VMware Server but not under Microsoft's products.

However, for this purpose, if you could add a 64-bit guest then it wouldn't solve the problem that Mr. Armstrong described here.  You need a 32-bit guest to run domain joined 32-bit Windows Server 2003 R2, and run beta 1 of System Center Virtual Machine Manager in a 32-bit guest.  That is what Mr. Armstrong reported his success with.

I am talking about a virtual server host running on 64 bit cpu and running the 64bit version of virtual server.

I am well aware that I can't create 64 bit guests, which doesn't bother me at all.

To Kim Oppalfens:

Oh, you meant that you can't add 64-bit hosts to the list of targets managed by SCVMM?  I misinterpreted your statement about adding 64-bit hosts, I thought you meant adding virtual machines to the Virtual Server app.  Sorry.
