Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Release Candidate available for download

Per the title of this post, the Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 RC build can now be downloaded here (note - if you have not signed up for the beta program - you will need to go here instead - and sign up first).  There are no significant new features from the beta 2 released - but there are many bug fixes.

Cheers,
Ben

FYI It appears that the link to download the 32-bit installer actually downloads the 64-bit installer and vice-versa.

Are 64-bit guests supported in this release? I read different opinions if the R2 SP1 will support that.

Jeremy - the links have been fixed now.

SvenC - No, only 32-bit guests.  64-bit guests will be supported in the upcoming release of Windows Server Virtualization.

Cheers,

Ben

I am having trouble downloading. It doesn't appear as an available connection. I signed up previously to download beta 2, which now has only 42 days left. The only recently added download I can see is the readme. Any ideas?

Virtual Server 2005 R2 and WMware server, can they run on same host OS ?

When can we expect 64-bit guests to be supported on VS2005R2 ?

Thanks in advance !

Nikola,

yes, you can run both on the same system, however, you will have problems if you try to run to VMs and have hardware virtualization enabled on both VS and VMWS.

64bit guest support won't be available until Viridian, or MS virtualization, which will be about 180 days after longhorn rtms

I never tried to install a release candidate of any kind of SP. What happens if in the future I try to install a RC2? Or a final version? I must unistall the previous version of the SP I assume, but that wont give me any extra problems?

Cheers!

Usually true (if not always).

That's pretty much random.  Sometimes you can do an uninstall.  Sometimes you have to do uninstallations in exactly the right order.  Sometimes Microsoft provides an uninstaller as a separate download.  Sometimes you have to pave your hard disk and reinstall your original Windows system.

This is exactly the reason why you shouldn't install betas, RCs, new Windows versions prior to SP3, etc., on production machines.  You should only install them on crash boxes.  Usually you should install them in virtual machines so it's easy to throw them away and reinstall, but that technique doesn't work here because the developers of Visual Server aren't Hofstadter fans.

augusto,

this is not a service pack.  you can't just install SP1, when you install, you reinstall the whole app.  To revert back, you'd simply unistall this version, and install your old Virtual Server 2005

It still seems random to me.  I seem to recall some service packs being uninstallable, for some versions of Windows (memorably not including NT4), Office, etc.  I seem to recall uninstalling a beta SP1 of Visual Studio 2005 without having to uninstall and reinstall Visual Studio 2005, but I might be misremembering the additional hotfix that gets it running on Vista.

Any harm/problems taking virtual machines (Win2k3 Std R2 VHDs) images between the beta and RC?

Just upgraded my 2005-SP1-Beta2 installation, running on Win2K3 R2 x64 with Intel VT-x.  All went smoothly.

The guest machines, a mixture of Win2K3, Ubuntu Linux and WinXP are all working fine.
