Mapping Balloon Travel Patterns

Richard Jones at Binary Refinery pinged me about this fun thing to do / scientific experiment with balloons and maps - The Racing Balloon. On July 5, Richard and friends launched 275 balloons in an effort to raise money for Waterbeach Community Primary Schools. The idea is that you would donate some pounds to sponsor a balloon in the race and find out where your balloon ends up. Microsoft donated some prizes for the person whose balloon traveled the furthest.

To track your sponsored balloon or if you found one of these mysterious, yet bio-degradable balloons, you can log on to The Racing Balloon web site and report where you found it using Virtual Earth. Or, if you just want to see where all the balloons that have been found you can do that too. Sounds like a great classroom experiment for students studying wind patterns.
