ASP.NET features postponed

In order to ensure high quality for ASP.NET 2.0, the team has decided they need to remove a small set of features that are in Beta 1. Shanku provides all the details.
For those with click-a-phobia, here's the list:
  • Mobile Device Adapters for ASP.NET Server Controls
  • PhoneLink and ContentPager Controls
  • Site counters, DynamicImage Control, and the Image Generation Service
  • WebPartPageMenu Control

  • Access Data Providers

  • DataSetDataSource
  • Built-in Global Themes

  • Web Administration Tool Profile/Reports Tab

I won't miss those (maybe access data provider), but...

Please get rid of Web Parts. They are bloated mess that only rarely can be used. I'm not often developing a portal. And even if I am, I dont need to allow my users to drag and drop pieces of HTML. Get rid of it!!

I agree this.

Lets see you are going to miss the Access Data Adapters but not miss the Web Parts. You must really do some serious web development. I would not miss Access at all, but make sure you keep those web parts in their because they are a fantastic tool (when used in an appropriate scenario)

I *don't* agree with those who want to remove Web Parts.
Nobody's forcing anyone to use them if they don't want to.
If it troubles you, don't look :-)

Will the phone links be back anytime soon? That seemed like a great feature for us mobile developers.

Please keep the web parts. I am a portal developer and I see more and more people asking for portal type pages. This would save a lot of time in the development process

The "Access Data Providers" are must for all the small websites, who ALSO want to use the latest features and technolgy. Removing/Postponing them, is very very bad.

Please note all the people in the world, can neither afford nor manage, nor need SQL Server (infact, a very little only need).

I'll miss the Dynamic Image control. The Access Data Providers can go, as long as MSDE(Sql Express) is in. It provides a better platform for the smaller websites then access. And upward mobility to SQL Server if needed.

There is no reason that the dynamic image control could not be saved by forcing it to only use query string variables to pass data.

What were the real problems here, that prevented this component from reaching the final product, Does anybody know ?

I guess I am just frustrated by all of this, and a bit concerned that everything I am working on right now will be removed from the product by the time it ships.

Sorry to hear about the components going - what a jump though...first we had ASP, then ASP.NET and now ASP.NET 2.0!!! (It brings tears to my eyes!!) I didnt think it was possible to write less code than in ASP.NET. Now it is!!!

BTW: Web Parts are sensational!!!! Portals - all there! (hopefully the guy above has heard of portals). As far as they are 'bloated' pieces....etc. They are based on a User control. You know a plain jane *.ASCX control.

I reckon if Microsoft gave developers a Mercedes Benz out the front of your houses - you'd be bitching that the seats are too low or something!!!

Anyway - two cents for me. I do base my living off developing and integrating Microsoft products - I sleep easy at night.

Have fun all.

Maybe I'm missing something, but "WebPartPageMenu" i think is just a control used by webparts. Perhaps the entire WebParts implementation will still be there minus this feature?

Will there be HttpRequest compliant javascript for Mozilla based browser and the new postback model?

I know that ASP.NET WebControls was boring just because of their assumption that non IE browser may not be standard compliant (I feel the oposite) and replacing divs by tables and such weird thing.

JScript is not a preference for me, I prefer Javascript and DOM, as well as I use both COM object in IE for HttpRequest and HttpRequest object in Mozilla...
