The Return of Database Diagramming! (by Tim)

Published 30 September 04 10:03 AM

Due to popular demand, starting in the October CTP you will be able to create database diagrams using Whidbey with Yukon databases.  There are a few changes that have been made to the Whidbey database diagramming capability:

-         Diagrams are now assigned a database user as an owner.  Individual database users can only see their own diagrams unless they’re a member of the db_owner role.  Members of the db_owner role can see any diagram in the database.

-         Only SQL Server Yukon is supported for Whidbey diagramming.

-         Many minor UI enhancements, additional shortcut keys, and better IAccessibility support.

Thanks for the abundance of feedback that pushed us to get this back into the product!

Thank goodness. Now, how about getting this into the Yukon IDE bits!? :)

Diagrams need to be available for ALL versions of Sql Server, not just Whidbey.

BTW, thanks for putting them back in. :-)

Well, I'd perfer to get XM out the door without diagramming rather than delaying for this feature. I don't know how much of the community I vote for here. :)

Database Diagramming for Yukon in Whidbey

Kent, for those of us who work in both the database side and DAL side with very large and complex database structures, this is almost a must-have feature. Not quite an absolute feature, but a really, really, really would like to have it feature. I wouldn't mind a delay to see it come to light fully.

And yes, the diagramming should be there for all versions of Sql Server, not just Yukon.

Raymond... XM is already painfully late for some of us. While I fully support having the feature in SSMS (for the same reasons you do), I think Microsoft hasn't helped SSX by not getting XM out-the-door.

Interesting but I have a feeling that there are far better tools on the markter for modelling databases (Powerdesigner, ER/Studio, Erwin, etc...).

Unless the tools provided by MS in the upcomming releases can at least compete with the one's mentioned above I won't be able to use it.

Modelling is not just about jotting a few boxes. It's about the fundamental principles of database implementations. Maintaing data dictionaries, documenting logical and business rules, version control, migration planning etc..

Kept me in suspense since the alpha... Great to hear that it's gonna come back in.

Secondo quanto riportato sul blog di Tim Laverty, Program Manager di VSData, i diagrammi per SQL Server 2005 (Yukon) saranno disponibili nella prossima versione di Visual Studio (Whidbey).

Another vote for database diagramming being very important, and that it at least support SQL Server 2000 as well as Yukon.

Yukon-only makes it much less useful - SQL2K will still be in use when the successor to Yukon comes out.
