A Patch for the November CTP (VS 2005, Standard)

http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/1/6/116F9AB8-BEBE-425D-A81E-0603BCE6DA2E/SmartDeviceProject.msiIf you build a managed VB or C# .NET CF Application using the November CTP and then press F5 or CRTL+F5 to deploy the application, currently it fails to deploy. This patch will enable you to deploy Managed .NET CF Apps successfully.

While this patch will unblock users who have been wanting to do Managed Development with the November CTP Drop, it is being provided AS-IS and has gone through very limited testing and verification. Though most people who tried this patch and help verify it (Thanks Daniel, Alex, Neil and many others) said it worked, there were one or two instances where after installing this patch, there were package load failures in the Smart Device Project Package.

So here is what is needed

1. Make a copy of the smartdeviceproject.dll and keep it safely in case you experience a package load or other failures that prevent you from even using the designers. This file is in the <VS Install Folder>\smartdevices\projects\ folder.

Close VS if it is running. Download the Patch from MSDN.

2. Install the MSI and it will copy the smartdevicesproject.dll on your machine. Then copy this to the <VS Install Folder>\smartdevices\projects\

3. Restart Visual Studio, Create and Build a new C# or VB .NET CF Application. Press F5 or CTRL+F5 and your application should successfully get deployed to the emulator.

Thanks

No it is not fixed in the December CTP. The devices bits in the December CTP are actually older than the November CTP.

I cannot download that file. Any where else to get it? "Requested site is unavailable or cannot be found."

I am looking into the download issue. Looks like Groups default setting now does not allow files to be downloaded. As a very quick work around simply go to http://groups.msn.com/achoprablogpics/documents.msnw
Log in with you .NET Passport and then download the file.
I will get this file on gotdotnet or another download site tomorrow.
Sorry for the inconvinience.

I have the same inability to deploy to either a PPC device or the emulator after applying the patch. Is there anything else to try in order to enable smart device support?

Hello Mark, A couple of people who did mention that this patch did not work had Beta 1 on the same machine. Can you include some additional details regarding this issue
- What is the Help About Version of VS ?
- Did you have B1 on this same machine ?
- What is the error message you get when you Deploy (does CTRL+F5 work ?)
- Is this message the same as when you applied the patch and before that ?
Thanks
Amit

Hi Mark, I looked at your recent comments in the Product feedback bug that you had logged.

The messages you are seeing are not related to this patch.

Do you get the same error when doing CTRL+F5 ?

For the CTPs I am not sure how efficient the un-install of various components is when you uninstall VS so I suspect there might be a mis-match of some DEC CTP components (which are actually older) and could have caused some conflict.

Hi Amit,

I did have Beta 1 on the system prior to the November CTP. The Help.About lists version 8.0.41202.0 and identifies the November CTP on the icon.

If I attempt CTRL-F5, I get no message except the "Deploy failed" on the bottom status line followed by a popup of 'There were deployment errors. Continue? yes/no'. I never see the start of the emulator. Interestingly enough, if I continue past the popup that says 'deploy errors' (presumably trying to launch the application), I get a message that says "The operation could not be completed. Class not registered".

There was no difference in messages or actions before & after the patch process.

After applying the patch, I am able to deploy to emulator. However, I am not able to deploy to the real PocketPc as it complies that activesync version is not supported (I am using AS v3.8). Any idea?

I'll look into some kind of a workaround to enable you to avoid this error.

Hi Amit,

Just a note, that I am not tied to AS 3.8. If it works with another version just let me know.
