Announcing RTW version of Visual Studio 2008 Web Deployment Projects (WDP)

In December 2007, we had released Community Technology Preview (CTP) version of  VS 2008 Web Deployment Projects... Thanks a ton to all of you in the community for being so active in adopting and trying the CTP versions of WDP... Since the December CTP we have been monitoring the blogs, MS Connect feedback system as well WDP forums to collect your feedback and then have been working over last month or so to incorporate it within the product...

Today is a big day for the WDP team as we are finally able to provide you all with the final "Release To Web" version of Visual Studio 2008 Web Deployment Projects...  We are very excited to have you all try this RTW version so without any further delay let us get into the details of how to get started:

Installation Notes:

  • Uninstalling CTPs of WDP 2008 before installing RTW Version: You will need to uninstall December 2007 CTP of WDP before installing this version... If you have any other versions of Visual Studio 2008 WDP that you may have received for private trials you will have to uninstall them as well...  Uninstalling any of these versions should not cause the content of your WDP project file to be impacted...
  • Side by Side with WDP 2005: Visual Studio 2008 WDP RTW version can be installed side by side with Visual Studio 2005 WDP...
  • Pre-RTM Versions of Visual Studio 2008 (Codename "Orcas"): Visual Studio 2008 WDP RTW cannot be installed on any pre-RTM versions of Visual Studio 2008...
  • Visual Studio 2008 Express Version: Visual Studio 2008 WDP RTW cannot be installed on top of Visual Web Developer Express Edition...

Features and Functionality:

  • New Features of Visual Studio 2008 Web Deployment Projects are as below... You can read in detail about these features on the post which announced December 2007 CTP of VS 2008 WDP (Click here to go to the December 2007 CTP post)
    • Migration from WDP for VS 2005 to WDP for VS 2008
    • Replacing WDP output only if Pre-Compilation succeeds
    • Creating IIS Applications
    • Using aspnet_merge.exe version which is installed with Visual Studio 2008
  • Core WDP Features

Download Location:

You can download this RTW version from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=0AA30AE8-C73B-4BDD-BB1B-FE697256C459&displaylang=en

ASP.NET Merge Utility:

There was community feedback about trying to get aspnet_merge.exe  independent of Web Deployment Projects for use within Visual Studio Express editions...  Good news is that ASP.NET Merge Utility is now available as a part of Microsoft® Windows® Software Development Kit (SDK) for Windows Server® 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5 which can be downloaded from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=74dd6e2d-89c6-4e1e-af00-fc7d70f15439&DisplayLang=en

Improvements in WDP RTW version:

We believe that we have addressed various issues related to config replacements, additional Dlls appearing in the output, After build tasks, Temp build Dir and several others...

We hope that Visual Studio 2008 Web Deployment Projects RTW version will make your deployment easy and better...  We will love to hear from you so please let us know your feedback...  Happy Deploying!!

On behalf of WDP Team

It's a good project, I can't understand why it's not a regular part of VS (surely MS should have enough resources for that).

I think the next step should be to get database deployment including versioning in this tool.

Hello!

Please, help us to resolve the problem with "Visual Studio 2008 Web Deployment Projects".

The easiest way to reproduce it is the following one:

1. Create new "ASP.NET Web Site" with default options.

2. Add new C++ "Empty project" to the solution.

3. Add Web Deployment Project (context menu of web-site project).

4. Save and close the solution.

5. Open it again.

6. The "Conversion Wizard" will appear. And it appears each time you will open it.

I am one of the people who asked for aspnet_merge.exe to be made available separately, for use within the Visual Studio Express editions. At first sight, I was pleased to read that it had been made available in the SDK. Unfortunately, that’s a huge 1171 MB download that will take ten a half hours to download. That’s not practical for most of us to obtain aspnet_merge.exe, which is probably only 1 MB at the most. Therefore I’d like to reiterate the request for aspnet_merge.exe to be provided as a standalone download.

Hi Henry,

There was a problem with web.config replacement in the December CTP release but should now be fixed in this RTW release.  Do you still have the previous version installed?  Or are you seeing it with the RTW release mentioned in the above post?

Thanks,

The web.config replacement problem is still occurring on my system as well. As instructed, prior to installing the release version, I closed VS 2008, uninstalled the December CTP. Installed the RTW version and built the deployment project. Web.config does not contain the replacement sections.

As a result, I went so far as to remove the original deployment project and re-configure a new one. Same problem. One other note, I do have the original VS 2005 WDP release installed. The notes say that's OK. Please help.

# January 29, 2008 2:09 AM

John Walker said:

Ok, an update. Not sure exactly what I did to fix this, but for some reason when I went into the WDP properties, the config replacement checkbox was unchecked. I check it, saved, and checked and it was still saved. Now when I re-built everything is as expected.

# January 29, 2008 2:22 AM

John Walker said:

Ok, last one. My problem seems to have been related to the my build configuration setting. There appears to be different config replacement section settings depending on your build configuration (a good thing). So, if you changed your build configuration, check out the deployment project properties "Deployment" tab to make sure the config replacement values are set correctly for that build configuration.

To echo other comments, it is quite painful to download the 1.2gb SDK just for aspnet_merge.  Never the less, I did that after installing WDP.  Now, when I try to build a website with WDP taking all the defaults, I get this error: Error 1 "aspnet_merge.exe" exited with code -532459699.  I tried to google the error code, but turned up nothing.  Any ideas?

Yes, the Conversion Wizard appearing for the WDP project and all the projects and the solution is made by VS 2008.

May be it would be useful if I send you my test solution for repro?

Yes indeed you can do so... On the 'Compilation' page of WDP just uncheck te box "Allow this precompiled site to be updatable" and then you can choose the options from the 'Output Assemblies' page...

The Microsoft.WebDeployment.targets file does not contain a "GetTargetPath" target.  As a result, if a Web Deployment Project is referenced in another project (such as a WiX project), a build attempt will fail with the message, "The target 'GetTargetPath' does not exist in the project."

Based on Microsoft.common.targets, it appears that perhaps the Microsoft.WebDeployment.targets file should include something similar to the following:

 <Target Name="GetTargetPath" Outputs="$(Property)"/>

What would an appropriate value be for the output property of that target?  $(TargetPath)?  $(WDOutDir)?  Something else?

Thank you

Hello!

I have installed RTW version of Visual Studio 2008 Web Deployment Projects (WDP) and created a simple ASP.NET Web Application (C#). After it I added a Web Deployment Project and now every time I open the solution I am asked to convert the deployment project.

Hello Vishal,

Just 2 days ago I noticed that everytime I open certain solutions, which worked fine in the past, in VS2008 it will ask me to convert it using the VS Conversion Wizard (it thinks its a 2005 soluton?).

Strange thing is that I have had the 2005 & 2008 web deployment project installed (both VS2005 & 2008 installed on my machine) and it woked fine for a few months.

If I oppen the the solution file it says Version 10 it the header so it *is* as VS2008 solution.

So I started elimitating projects from this solution and I found out that the Web Deployment Project is the trigger for this Conversion Wizard to pop up each time. Deleting this project and adding it again did not solve the problem.

Should I uninstall the 2008 WDP and install it again.

The only thing that I can come up with as a cause is that it coincided with the installation of Vista SP1. Coincidence?
