Error installing Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Beta and Silverlight Tools Beta 1

Summary

Microsoft Silverlight Tools Beta 1 for Visual Studio 2008 is not compatible with Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Beta.   The good news is that Silverlight Tools Beta 2 for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 is coming soon.  Until then you will not be able to install both Silverlight Tools and Visual Studio 2008 SP1.

Until Silverlight Tools Beta 2 ships you'll need to uninstall Silverlight Tools Beta 1 to evaluate Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Beta.  Likewise, if you've already installed Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Beta then you'll need to uninstall it before installing Silverlight Tools Beta 1.

Error installing VS SP1 Beta

If you install Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Beta while Silverlight Tools Beta 1 is installed you'll get this error message:

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 SP1 (Beta) does not apply, or is blocked by another condition on your system. Please click the link below for more details.

Here is a screen shot of the error dialog:

image

The get more information link from the dialog above takes you to the readme for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Beta which includes the following information:

2.1.4.Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 cannot install when SilverLight Tools is installed on machine

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 (Beta) will not install if you have Silverlight Tools already installed on your system. The following error message will show up if you attempt the installation:
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 SP1 (Beta) does not apply, or is blocked by another condition on your system. Please click the link below for more details.
If you wish to apply Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 to your Visual Studio 2008 installation, you must first uninstall Silverlight Tools.

To resolve this issue:

Uninstall steps for Silverlight Tools are as follows:

(Note if you installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 with a DVD you will first need to insert the DVD into your computer before proceeding with the uninstall of Silverlight Tools).

For Vista or newer:

  1. Open the Remove Programs dialog from the Control Panel
  2. Uninstall Silverlight Tools Beta for VS2008
  3. Click 'View installed updates' in the task bar on the left
  4. Remove KB949325 (it will be listed under your version of VS2008)

For pre-Vista systems:

  1. Open the Add/Remove Programs dialog from the Control Panel
  2. Uninstall Silverlight Tools Beta for VS2008
  3. Click 'Show updates' at the top of the window
  4. Remove KB 949325 (it will be listed under your version of VS)

Optional addendum to both:
5. Uninstall Silverlight 2 SDK (this will also uninstall the ASP.NET server controls used for hosting Silverlight applications). Uninstalling is not required.

In addition to uninstalling "Microsoft Siliverlight Tools Beta 1 for Visual Studio 2008" you must also uninstall KB 949325.  This patch is only visible in Add and Remove Programs if you select "View Installed Updates".

Error after installing Silverlight Tools Beta 1

If you install Silverlight Tools Beta 1 after Visual Studio 2008 SP1 you will not get any errors during the installation.   However, this will break your Visual Studio installation, causing the following error when trying to open or create a project:

clip_image002[5]

To recover from this error, uninstall Silverlight Tools Beta 1 and KB 949325 as outlined above in the readme.   This will restore the Visual Studio 2008 SP1 files.

How to get Help?

Heath Stewart has an excellent post and utility at http://blogs.msdn.com/heaths/archive/2008/05/09/visual-studio-and-net-log-collection-utility.aspx on how to collect the VS setup logs and where to upload them on Microsoft Connect when reporting a problem.

If you run into other Silverlight Tools installation issues please check out the "Installation and Setup" forum here: http://silverlight.net/forums/13.aspx

Thanks for the help. The log file of the VBS script says this:

6/21/2008 16:11:24 [silverlight_tools_fixup] End of Script

This is odd considering VS 2008 Express IS in fact listed in my Add/Remove programs list. Does this mean it could be a corrupt installation and should I uninstall/reinstall to try to correct the issue?

Hey Joshua, Unfortunately Silverlight Tools doesn't currently support the Express versoins of VS.

It will work with the 90 evaluation version of VS Pro here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vs2008/products/cc268305.aspx

Support for Visual Web Developer Express will be available when Silverlight Tools is finally released.

Hope this helps,

Hi Joshua,

There is a version of VWD Express SP1 Beta.  The SP1 Beta version of VWD Express is a full product download versus an update (as is the case for VS2008).

Hope this helps.

Hi Bonkers,

Can you give specific details as to what you're seeing and hopefully we can point you in the right direction.  Are you saying that SharePoint Workflow projects don't work for you anymore, or something else?  What file type are you trying to open?  What's the specific error?  I'm assuming this only started occuring after installing SP1; if so do you have any other pre-release software installed, such as Silverlight B1 or B2 installed on your machine?

Thanks,
