SDK Workaround: J# Samples require VJ++ (Visual Studio) to be installed

This workaround applies to:

·         The prerelease Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008 and .Net Framework 3.5 (RC0), September, 2007

·         The prerelease Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008 and .Net Framework 3.5 (IDS04), July, 2007

·         The Windows SDK Update for Windows Vista (RTM), March, 2007

·         The Windows SDK for Windows Vista (RTM), November, 2006

J# samples will not build using the Windows SDK because there is no appropriate build environment.  This edition of the Windows SDK does not support building J# applications.  To workaround this issue, install Visual Studio (VJ++) 2005.

What do you think?  Do you use the J# samples in the SDK?  Should they be removed?

I think removing samples is almost always a bad idea. You never know when you might need them and it can be a real pain getting an old version of the SDK when you find out it has the answer you're looking for. The only compelling reason to remove a sample I see is when it is encouraging bad practices and there are no resources to modify it.

Thanks for the comment, Koby.  Even though you need additional resources that are not included in the SDK to work with the samples, sounds like the SDK is still a good place to aggregate this content. That's been my thinking too.

Please don't remove the J# samples. I still use VS2005 and VJ# Express and need to compile them.

How would you feel about getting the J# samples from the new MSDN Code Gallery http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/. This new developer portal is a quick place to get (and share) code snippets, samples, sample applications, and other great resources.  Because the J# samples are not changing, this might be a good place for users to pick them up.
