I’m the General Manager in SQL Server responsible for the WinFS team and I’ve been bored with computers and software in general. Now before I continue with that thread, some background info seems appropriate. I guess it comes a period that one must feel that way. Who knows. I am doing a lot of Java and I am a bit frustrated because it cannot reach deep into the os. It's like a toy to me to this day. I only program with it because I have a job. I would try .Net and C# but I'm too bored to learn it.

WinFS beta 1 released

Robert Scoble has uploaded the WinFS video to Channel 9. I'd been working with Groove quite extensively and I guess Groove is one of the innovations that excites every hair on my skin ;). But besides that, the storage system built for Groove is essentially encrypted XML files and that suck so much that its impossible to have large data stored in to it. The design and implemetation of such a fantastic concept is so much screwed up that a P2P revolution would be late by few years. Vista would ship with MS P2P stack ships, which I believe is using internal version of SQL Server Express for its storage but I don't think its making hexagones ;).

Applications And Platforms, An Another Face Of Internet And Why I Hate Groove http://www.shitalshah.com/blog/ApplicationsAndPlatformsAnAnotherFaceOfInternetAndWhyIHateGroove.aspx

re: Bored with computers

I'm very excited about WinFS. Instead of writing my whole own database server, I can now use profiles as Windows Files, and use WinFS to stitch everything together. This opens a whole floodgate of opportunities.

re: Bored with computers

Thanks, very good, and WinFS is really amazing, excellent technology.

re: Bored with computers

I love Rdb/VMS. I am not a MSDN subscriber so I can't answer them myself...

1. You mention about provinding a file storage for 3rd parties app. Does that means that with WinFS I would be able to store my app's data, in a single file with internal database-like access and structure (which I would be able to update with WinFS API)?

2. I have an app now with its own (proprietary) file format. Would I be able to expose content of my file to other application through some WinFS magic?
like, let's say, my app's file contains items with name and type properties (both strings).
Could I extends WinFS in such way that WinFS could look up in my files for an item with a given name and/or property?

What s in Store Bored with computers | Portable Greenhouse

PingBack from http://portablegreenhousesite.info/story.php?id=4316
