WWOS Cricket – now available for 6.5 non-touch phones

Last Friday I let you know that the Wide World of Sport (WWOS) Cricket Widget was available for 6.5 touch-based (Professional) phones. The good news this morning is those of you with 6.5 non-touch (Standard) phones, can now get this widget for your Windows phone.

To get the widget start Marketplace on your phone and type “Cricket” into the search bar.

You can also get access via the Marketplace web portal.

If you’ve purchased an HTC TouchPro2 via the open channel market in Australia then you can get the official update to Windows Mobile 6.5 for this phone.

Q:How do I know if my phone is open channel?

HTC Diamond 2 – 6.5 update available for Optus/Open Channel phones

On October 7 when Windows phone was launched, the HTC Touch Diamond2 was made available with Windows Mobile 6.5 from Telstra.

Before we launched 6.5, Optus and a lot of open channel/retail partners were selling the HTC Diamond2 powered by Windows Mobile 6.1. If you own one of these then good news – the official Windows Mobile 6.5 update is available.

Windows Marketplace for Mobile – Updates go live

There have been a set of upgrades go live on Windows Marketplace for Mobile through today – full details are on the updates is available on the windows team blog.

Summary of the updates;

1. Developer Portal improvements & stronger anti-piracy protection

2. Browse & Buy applications from the PC

To come later this month is extension of the service to Windows Mobile 6 and 6.1 customers.

Windows Marketplace update

Worth calling out is target to delivery 6 & 6.1 support is November, and that phase will also bring PC based catalogue & shopping experience.

HTC Snap – ActiveSync setup, if not on Telstra MMES Plans

The HTC Snap has been out for a while now through Telstra. The default configuration is set to take advantage of the new flat rate data plans – know as Microsoft Mobile Enterprise Solution (MMES) http://www.telstraenterprise.com/productsservices/mobility/officemobility/Pages/MicrosoftMobileEnterpriseSolution.aspx

We’ve been hearing that some customers are experiencing “difficulty” in setting up e-mail with the SNAP, so here’s the guide to getting Exchange ActiveSync setup if you’re not on the new Telstra plans (MMES).

Setting ActiveSync to connect through the “Internet” Connection

Press Start
Select ActiveSync
Press Menu
Select Add Server Source
Enter your Email address
Press Next
Enter your User name, Password and Domain
Press Next

The device will automatically download the Settings from the Exchange Server

Proceed directly to Step 10 if the Auto Configuration is successfully

If the device cannot complete the Auto Configuration, Enter your Server address, ensure “This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection” is checked and press Next
Press Menu
Select Advanced

Ensure the Connection: sliding panel is set to “Internet”

Press on OK if prompted and once you have read and understand the Warning Message

Press Save
Press Finish

By selecting Internet in Advanced Server Settings, ActiveSync will connect through the Connection which is defined in the Connection Settings of the device to Automatically Connect to the Internet.

Adobe plan to release Flash Player 10 for smartphones in Oct – Windows Mobile included.

Arne Hess at theunwired.net has a summary of the announcement by Adobe that they plan to release Flash Player 10 for smartphones in October – read it at the::unwired.

The platforms include Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android & webOS … great to see Windows Mobile there, as that will add to the native support of Flash Lite 3.1 in Windows Mobile 6.5.

Windows Marketplace for Mobile – update on updates

Reed & Steve (http://blogs.msdn.com/hegenderfer/default.aspx) have posted re an announcement of details from the Marketplace team around the “Windows Marketplace for Mobile”.

There had been concern that updates to applications would be counted in the the $99 fee. This has been clarified by the Marketplace team in answers to the following questions (as taken from Reed & Steve’s blog)

“Q:Do I need to pay the $99 fee again to submit an application update?

A: No, if your application has been previously certified and published in the catalog, you can submit subsequent updates without incurring any additional fees. The application update will be made available through Windows Marketplace to all customers that have downloaded your application in the past.

Q: I previously heard that you only had 7 days to submit a free update. Has this changed?

A: Yes, we originally communicated that only application updates submitted within 7 days of their publish date would benefit from a free submission. After talking to the developer community and better understanding the dynamics and frequency of application updates, we have decided to extend the original 7-day window and make it permanent. This means that if an application has been previously approved in the marketplace the developer can submit updates to it without incurring any additional fees.”

We’d recommend keep track of developer.windowsmobile.com as more details are made public.

Live Mesh for Windows Mobile

If you were at TechEd Australia you would have seen a demo/preview of Live Mesh for Windows Mobile. In my blog reading today I came across this posting on msmobiles.com - Live Mesh for Windows Mobile is out of closed-beta.

I've been using Live Mesh for 4 months now, and find the flexibility it offers in accessing files on many different PC's great. One excellent use for Live Mesh is to sync my "Favourites" folder across the different machines I use - getting access to favourite links from my work Tablet PC and the HTC Shift I use when travelling interstate/overseas is now seamless, I just now any sites I've added to My Favourites will be there.

Accessing Live Mesh for Windows Mobile : go to http://m.mesh.com from your Windows Mobile 6 or 6.1 device, login then install the client onto your phone.

Now that Live Mesh for Windows Mobile is in open beta I'm looking forward to trying it out, once I've got it setup & using it I'll post my thoughts. We'd be keen to hear about your experience in try Live Mesh for Windows Mobile too.

Palm Treo Pro - First Smartphone with Telstra Blue Tick

Last Thursday Telstra awarded it's Blue Tick to the Palm Treo Pro, the ninth phone, and importantly the first Smartphone to be given this award.

the Telstra Blue Tick identifies handsets recommended for rural coverage on the NextG network.

Telstra identify NextG coverage of their handsets for

Metropolitan
Major Regional
Rural

All other Smartphones today (Apple, Nokia, RIM, Windows Mobile) are recommended for Metro & Major Regional, but the Palm Treo Pro is recommended for Metro, Major Regional & Rural areas.

HTC Touch Diamond launched in Australia, with Telstra

On Tuesday (24th June) a few of us from the WMOz team attended the official launch for the HTC Touch Diamond. The good news - it's the first WM6.1 device to be launched in Australia.

The launch event was held in partnership with Telstra, as there is a bunch of customised services that Telstra will deliver on the Touch Diamond. Expectation for availability was given as late July/early August.

The main focus was on Horace Luke (Chief Innovation Officer for HTC) as he demonstrated the Touch Diamond interface, showing off the TouchFLO 3D experience, rich browsing including one handed zoom and text rendering, streaming of YouTube content, with quite an emphasis on leveraging the full speed of the Telstra network.

The spec's for the Touch Diamond that will be on the Telstra NextG network are:

HSDPA 7.2 (upload) 3.6 (download)
640x480, 2.8inch (7cm) VGA display
Bluetooth, WiFi
3.2 megapixel camera
850Mhz support - so will access full speed capability of the NextG network, with customised services such as WhereIs, TradingPost, FoxTel, Sensis.

oh, nearly forgot to mention - the weather pane has a neat "windscreen wiper" effect to clear the droplets on a rainy day
