Building Always Up To Date Applications with Web Services

There's an interesting article on MSDN by Alex Yakhnin (from IntelliProg) about how to implement Always-Up-To-Date (AUTD) functionality using web services:

Find out how to implement always-up-to-date (AUTD) data synchronization functionality in the .NET Compact Framework by creating the generic ServiceWatcher class that could be used for monitoring any custom type of Web service.

Alex also points to more information on a Exchange Team blog post.

What sorts of AUTD data and applications are you building?  Does the solution outlined by Alex meet your needs?  If not, what's missing?

It seems that the proposed solution by Alex does not include the power management aspect in the PPC. I believe in a PPC, all communication protocols (except phone & sms) are disconnected in the sleep mode. I understand that it is possible to keep the device awake programmaticaly by resetting the sleep timer. However, it will drain the battery very fast. 3 hours maximum for a PPC.
