Greetings and Maintenance Update

Hey!  I’m Derek and I work with e and Shreddy here at Xbox LIVE.

Our maintenance is going well – the team has been working hard through the night, and we have had minimal issues thus far.

A lot of questions around why 24 hours?  That is a great question, and one I get asked in a lot of forums, even at review time J  In truth, that is an important area for us in terms of improvement, and the maintenance we are doing today takes us a number of steps down the path to being able to do this more efficiently in the future.  Xbox LIVE is a complex, robust machine, and the business has grown so quickly over its young existence – the prioritization of what to work on in terms of stuff that makes the service more fun vs. stuff that keeps it running is always difficult at best.  We have a super exciting year ahead with a whole bunch of cool stuff coming that will make us users even more happy, while feeding our friendly machine at the same time.

Will keep you all updated as the day progresses…. We are working real hard to come in under the wire on this one.

Well I must say I'm excited to see new features in the Fall/Winter 2009. Can't wait to be on LIVE and I'd rather have it down 24 hours then 12 hours and have problems.

Take your time! :)

# Miguel said on June 16, 2009 12:51 PM:

Thanks so much for giving us a wonderful platform to enjoy and have fun. Thanks in advance for these updates.

# Quosef said on June 16, 2009 12:52 PM:

Any chance this update will speed up the anywhere from 5 to 10 second "pause" that occurs when accessing live functions?  Just wondering...

# Simon said on June 16, 2009 12:55 PM:

Thanks for the update - BUT what are you actually doing? a lil more advanced technical talk please ;)

# Jed05 said on June 16, 2009 12:57 PM:

So I'm sure there won't be any "new features" "noticeable improvements" after all this is said and done? I wish the dashboard were faster.

Also, working hard to come in under the wire makes me worry haha.

# Snapsv15 said on June 16, 2009 12:58 PM:

I know you guys and girls are doing your best but I find this situation totally ridiculous.  We pay for this service and on top of that we wont see any changes until after it is shut down for more maintenance in a few months.

I hope you come in significantly under the 24 hours.

# t360uk_smiley said on June 16, 2009 1:03 PM:

Snapsv15, its like 10c/10p... get over it?

The little downtime is fine by me, heh, even my servers at work go down more often than xbl! :D Hope it goes well, would love to see deeper details (I know your limited on what you can say) but if you even just said "adding more servers / reconfiguring routing / just adding more cooling / etc" then at least that would give us some idea of what your doing...?

# bigzkilla44 said on June 16, 2009 1:03 PM:

I've trying to get on all day....keep getting the MTU error message.  I've powered off, unplugged and reconnected all my router and pc cables, messed with my router settings etc... NOW I find out xbox live is off line!!!!  You think maybe you could prominently display that xbox is off line on the home page of the web site instead of burying it in the "calendar" of events?

# milky said on June 16, 2009 1:04 PM:

what are you actually going to be updating or putting on the xbox live as no one has told me!!

# @bigzkilla44 said on June 16, 2009 1:09 PM:

This is a message for bigzkilla44. Everyone was sent an automated message on Xbox Live saying that the server was going to be down. Now whether or not you actually opened it and read it is a different story.

# MAKAKI said on June 16, 2009 1:12 PM:

For those who claim this was a surprise unscheduled event.

I got a considerable amount of announcements, regarding the system being down today. These started at least 5 days before today.

a) An xbox live message from "The System".

b) Spotlights had a entry on the maintenance day.

c) I think there was also a major nelson or similar entry other than the spotlight.

d) Majornelson.com website

e) Most game news sites like: kotaku, joystick

f) Friends who read any of the above and then told me.

# Chickiquin said on June 16, 2009 1:20 PM:

Thanks to the xbox team ofr keeping it up and running. The only reason some people are upset is b/c they have to actual get out a do something rather then sit on the couch. I play alot but I know the maintence is needed and I am ok with it.

# Digi said on June 16, 2009 1:22 PM:

I Picked up Prototype yesterday to get me through this :D

If its for the good of the service then why not - 24 hours is nothing when you thing about it.

As was mentioned somewhere above, take your time guys

# Shamrock said on June 16, 2009 1:25 PM:

I always wondered why it's not possible to go to a backup system when you guys do maintenance.  For instance some type of backup servers that have minimum functionality such as keeping matchmaking open in games, allowing people to see their friend list, chat, invite, message etc.

I can understand disabling downloading, the marketplace, live aware (what games people are playing) etc...  But why does it always have to be the entire service down for maintenance.

# soupmama said on June 16, 2009 1:37 PM:

# tyrone hawk said on June 16, 2009 1:58 PM:

Why are people crying for the maintenance? Take in mind that we were given enough time ahead to be prepared. Some companies will not care for their users and send notices too late, or not even one.

There's more than just live, people, and remember your console still runs if you want to play on your own (or with your family and friends locally).

Grow up, will ya?

# pizzapizzapizza said on June 16, 2009 2:06 PM:

I'd rather had a planned and pre-announced 24-hour downtime and an unexpected week of spotty service like we did last Christmas.

# Doctor Seleski said on June 16, 2009 2:12 PM:

One day without XBL is worth all of the great stuff that is coming our way. Thanks for all the hard work!

# DigitalFiction said on June 16, 2009 2:19 PM:

Its just frustrating that today is the one day this week I get to sit and enjoy my Xbox 360.  I'll get over it, take your time and do the job right!

# Bob said on June 16, 2009 2:29 PM:

I'm ok that XBOX live is down, but it won't even let me start the Windows Media Center extender on my XBOXes - so no TV or music for the entire family all day!  Why does it need XBOX live for a local Media Center connection?

UNDER 24 Hours Please :) thanks

# Hans said on June 16, 2009 3:02 PM:

@Shamrock They are doing database changes, which probably accounts for the larger scope of the scheduled downtime. (20 million players, 30 million xboxes, X billion entries for gamer score etc)

They cannot update anything there without breaking the update, which is why the forums are read only (most likely from a backup server group) for example.

Allowing you to sign into LIVE would be the same thing as allowing you to deploy updates to Xbox Live - which would fail == REALLY BAD. From a customer relations point of view, it's better to do it this way rather than giving a really shaky service with lost points, gamerscore and MS points for the next week.

# GeekInABox said on June 16, 2009 3:03 PM:

Derek --

thanks for the update and I hope things go well.  I really hope that in the future you folks find ways to more smoothly and transparetly handle maintenance.  I work in big corporate IT and certainly understand the complexity of large infrastructure and application changes, but really still think its the job of IT to learn to abstract away change from negative customer impact.  If my company had to shut off our multi-million dollar applications multiple times per year to faciltate upgrades then our bottom-line would suffer.

Obviously for this to work the entire service -- from infrastructure to the code/apps -- need to be architected with this in mind, and such an implementation is by no means simple nor in the control of one group/individual, but is nonetheless an admirable goal.

In the meantime good luck with the changes.

# Hans said on June 16, 2009 3:08 PM:

@GeekInABox - Dereks post says they are working towards just that, and that the service has grown faster than anyone had ever expected (and I ain't surprised, 30 million xboxes and 20+ million unique users - yeeez!).

Since you, just as myself, work with big corporate IT and multi billion dollar systems, you hopefully see why the database has to be read only when doing changes to the schema to provide for faster queries. :)

I'm sure that most of the maintenance that Xbox Live has are not even noticed by us users, because they do it in the background just as you say - it's major changes to the core that requires downtime.

# Hans said on June 16, 2009 3:11 PM:

@Xbox Live team: As this is an operations blog, is it possible for you to share some technical details, or would that be against company policy ?

# GeekInABox said on June 16, 2009 3:23 PM:

@Hans --

Yeah ... I caught the vaguely worded 'futures' ... I'm sure these guys want it smoother, too.

And I understand your comments about the database, but still would posit that there could strategies for how to structure and segment the data (and applications) to allow changes to certain data/areas while leaving the others functional.

Obviously their data is 'just' read-only right now ... read-inly could imply that some of the data is still functional and usable -- instead of completely offlining the *entire* service.

Again, I'm guessing that facets of this already exist in their architecture and that over time we'll hopefully see more and more of it.  Certainly not trivializing the guy, their efforts, or technical direction.

# RyanB said on June 16, 2009 3:23 PM:

Bob, same problem here.  WAF (SOAF I guess really in this case) is not good at the moment.  My girlfriend pressed the Live TV button and started complaining about nothing working.  I saw that the Xbox wasn't connected to Live and reset the router... just as she apparently was doing something on her laptop.  I then spent the next 5-10 minutes trying to figure out why the Media Center wasn't working properly only to see that I had NOTHING to do with it (despite being saddled with the blame).  Scanning my emails, I found Zune announced a maintenance window, but I didn't see any email from Live regarding the same.  It wasn't until I went and tested the Xbox Live connection, and I ignored the MTU "problem" that I could see the Status window.  So 2 points:

1) When there is a scheduled maintenance, show the Xbox live status front and center on the dashboard.

2) Make the Media Center Extender application independent of Xbox Live.

When your primary use of the Xbox is as a media hub, you receive no advanced warning of this outage.

# A K said on June 16, 2009 3:28 PM:

I want to play my arcade games.

Why didn't Microsoft release a quick patch to allow these games to be played while the maintenance was under way?

I paid for the game... I'm pretty sure I own a copy... and yet... I can't play it 'cause the evil sloppy code overlords want to know when and where I play the game?

BAH!

I have a question. You know how Xtival was a few weeks ago and there were 3 people who we could contact? how do others get a chance to do things like that?

# This sucks said on June 16, 2009 3:56 PM:

Instead of having downtime for up to 24hrs, why not split the updates/maintenance up in small batches, then see which times would be best over a few day period to do the maintenance.. (say when there are less people on) We know you can do that. That way it would only be down maybe 2-3 hrs a night for a week instead of everyone being without it for 24hrs..

# FifthEcho said on June 16, 2009 4:13 PM:

@This Sucks

As with several other people reading this blog, I work in a corporate IT environment. Speaking from personal experience, there are many processes which just won't work for that type of maintenance - rearranging a DB, relocating servers, upgrading networking cores, etc.

While I'm sure that the XBL Operations Team would love to not have to take this downtime (and not have to work a 24 hour shift), unfortunately, the reality is that sometimes these types of outages are unavoidable.

# LIVE Service Updates... said on June 16, 2009 4:14 PM:

I also don't understand why the whole service has to go down. If the system was built to be scalable correctly there could be temporary databases and transitioning scripts, it may not take out downtime completely but would cut down on it significantly, then it would just be a matter of turning off the service to reroute things.

Imagine if Google went down for 24 hours! ;)

# TH3xR34P3R said on June 16, 2009 4:16 PM:

@This sucks: they could do that, but, not recommended with a core service, since the way I see it, its better to have a full day down to get things right, rather a sloppy job every other day.

# Laitriem said on June 16, 2009 4:19 PM:

THe problem is while it may have been publicized for XBOX, people who use it for Windows Live Games For Windows are also affected (its the same network) and there was no notice.  I play GTA IV for PC and not once within steam or the game did I see a notice for the downtime

# Worldofwires said on June 16, 2009 4:25 PM:

# EvilTrovis said on June 16, 2009 5:11 PM:

I don't necessarily MIND the downtime, but please get it back up right. Last few times you guys had these "24 hour" downtimes it was far more like 30-36 hours, and even then some people still couldn't connect, which took days to fix.

# jimmy said on June 16, 2009 5:37 PM:

well i hope its actuaaly 24 hours it should be in 1 hour then

# GhosterOriginal said on June 16, 2009 5:38 PM:

I understand that maintenance must occur, and I almost do not mind paying for a service I cannot use, but I hope that these maintenance items being worked on and updated will eliminate the lagging in the games.

In any case, while I would rather be playing, I agree, do it right the first time so this does not have to continue creating issues. Peace out!

Maintenance is fine and all (and I certainly hope my dashboard will be faster), but did it have to occur on a Tuesday? It's NEW GAME DAY!

Certainly, I am perfectly able to play Ghostbusters on my Xbox withOUT Live being enabled - but not MP, and I have to wait another day to get my pre-order dlc. Not to mention that every achievement I earn offline won't be marked with the date. Tiny issues to be sure, but issues that could've been eliminated completely if the scheduled maintenance had occurred on Thursday, for example. Just a suggestion for next time.

Thank you XBox for all of the reliable service, So what if XBox live did lag a few weeks during Christmas? Itunes wouldent even let you touch the store for a few days. I come from an advanced computer user point of view, If they were to do a backup server with limited functionality you all would just bitch until you had full functionality. Simple. here are somethings to do until xbox is up!

1. Browse wiki

2. Ask your parents to go bowling or out to eat!

3. Listen to internet radio.

3. Go out near your house and see if you can find a girl to talk to, If you have someone special talk to them!

4. Build an electrical circuit, Troubleshoot until you get it!

5. Play an off-line game.

6. Put in your FPS multiplayer game and learn the aspects of the maps, Find a cool camping spot!

7. Invite a friend over and play some COD5!

8. Play your other consoles.

9. Call your other parent if there divorced.

10. Add lyrics to all of the songs in your Itunes library, Check out a band named Breaking Benjamin.

11. Clean up your computer physically and software wise!

12. If all else fails play some tower defense ( http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Tower+Defense )

# Johnnie* said on June 16, 2009 9:01 PM:

This update will probably not speed up the Live/Guide functions. The reason that is so slow is because I'm pretty sure the Guide can only use something like 48 megs of the 512mb of RAM that is available in the system while games are being played. That will always be what is holding back the speed of the guide. They'd need to allot more memory usage for the guide, but that won't happen since they want to use the most RAM for gameplay/graphics/textures.

That means if I take my xbox to camp, all those games I paid for are useless.

What kind of a crooked system is this? I'm demanding a refund for every game I couldn't play offline.

# TheRagingGeek said on June 16, 2009 9:15 PM:

I'm suprised that microsoft hasn't ponied up for some additional hardware for failover protection of their "premier online gaming experience" because if they truly had backup systems to step in when a box dies of overheat/overwork from us addicts, then they could theoretically run the entire service on the backup systems while they update production boxes, and then move us back onto production.

Maybe have like 2 30 minute cut offs in accessibility to boot players off of the prod/backups when you cutover to ensure the playerbase moves as one? with that kind of system you would only need a competent network team to be able to manage the server migrations into and out of the production realm.

I suppose doing so would raise our price of service, and unfortunately our EULA probably doesn't include any kind of SLA's to commit to.

Of course it's also possible that given the size and depth of the XBox Live database that they might just be running cleanup and archival scripts on the dbase, which if it is sizable enough might just take up at least 8-12 hours alone. food for thought for the IT pro's subscribed here.

# Toots McGee said on June 16, 2009 9:29 PM:

While I have no pressing need to be online during this maintenance, 24 hours of downtime for a paid service in any given year, much less one shot, is completely ridiculous customer service without proper compensation to the customer.  I guess that's why Microsoft hasn't included uptime in any SLA.   They wouldn't even be able to achieve 99.9% which itself is what tech shops hope they never have to straddle the line with.

# Bulldogk9 said on June 16, 2009 9:29 PM:

Umm....you guys were going to keep us updated "throughout the day." Yet, that was over 12 hours ago and no updates on how things are going.

Maybe Major Nelson needs to do a little more training on that whole PR-thing.

# unsatisfied customer said on June 16, 2009 9:34 PM:

Will we be compensated in any way for the downtime today?, as in extend gold membership for an extra day?

# xsilentxkillaxx said on June 16, 2009 9:34 PM:

ya the only reason i got on here waz bcuz they were supposed 2 keep us updated wat the heck(PG13)

# xsilentxkillaxx said on June 16, 2009 9:34 PM:

# xbox tuff guy said on June 16, 2009 9:36 PM:

24 hours is a little ridiculous.  I'd rather have 2 12 hour sessions.  It would affect a much smaller number of subscribers.

Can we get an eta?

# tootsie pop said on June 16, 2009 9:37 PM:

Any Update on the blog about the maintenance

# Upset said on June 16, 2009 9:37 PM:

an update to time remaining would be nice (for a service we are paying for)......

# Ole Thickness said on June 16, 2009 9:38 PM:

If I don't get an ETA in about 30 minutes, I'mma piss myself.

# Any New Updates on maintenance said on June 16, 2009 9:40 PM:

# Mikey said on June 16, 2009 9:49 PM:

I find it extremely frustrating that i payed for a service which under contract was a year long non-stop plan and i come home after an entire day of finals to relax and just chill to see i have no xbox live. Thank you microsoft, thank you for the "best day" ever

# Jim Power said on June 16, 2009 9:50 PM:

@ clindian When Xbox Live goes back up you should consider transferring the rights of your Arcade games to your new Xbox. If you have already done this within a year then you are screwed until that year's span is expired. Do you understand?

# moderator said on June 16, 2009 9:51 PM:

XBL cost 10 cents a day. You will get a check for 10 cents from Microsoft in the mail, or 8 Microsoft points if you so choose.

# tootsie pop said on June 16, 2009 9:52 PM:

Yea that must suck for you Mikey. Looking forward to chillax to see that you have no xbox live.

# xlive said on June 16, 2009 9:57 PM:

Alright guys, you claimed regular updates on the progress and there have been none.  You also claim to "take your feedback seriously".

My feedback is that you blew it on this one...give us some info please.

# IMV said on June 16, 2009 10:05 PM:

You guys are pathetic.  You can't even survive one single day without playing online? And yeah, I too came here to check the update status but to read all this whining makes me laugh. There is a world out there, maybe you want to check it out!

# tootsie pop said on June 16, 2009 10:06 PM:

I am actually Major Nelson's nephew, Captain Nelson. He told me to moderate this blog and pass the news along. He said there will be a reimbursement form under the 'account management' tab at xbox.com that you can access by signing in to your Gamertag. Note that this will only be available for Gold members.

# Crybaby said on June 16, 2009 10:08 PM:
