Trying to use your Xbox 360 as a Windows 7 Media Center Extender right now?

If you are, then you already know that it isn’t working.  You’re getting an error that states “This game requires a connection to Xbox LIVE”.

This requirement is unique to our pre-release operating systems such as the Windows 7 Beta.  Released OSes like Windows Vista – or Windows 7 when it ships later this year – do not have this requirement.  If you were surprised by this, we’re sorry.

Again, to be perfectly clear: the final version of Windows 7 will not require a connection to Xbox LIVE to use the extender functionality.

I use my Xbox 360 as a UPnP client with my D-Link SNAP. Works great regardless of any connection to Live since they are both plugged into the same router and are only a couple feet away

Has there been any talk about or any plans to make it so one gamer can send another gamer Microsoft Gamer Points?  So many times one of us would not have points or money to get a map pack or Live Arcade game.  It would be cool if we could send some of our point to that person so they can download the content and play with us.

Many of us have also been having a lot of dashboard hangups for some time now.  When we go to check our friends list or send a message it will stall on one part of the dashboard or another.  Will this be fixed on this update?

Also, in order to play any of the TV shows, Movies or Videos I have downloaded it will not let me watch them while the XBOX Live is down because the videos require a license that is not on our systems but on XBOX Live.  I can understand not being able to play on XBOX Live, but we should be able to watch our videos while the service is down.  Can this be changed?

@Xbox Maverick and @hunterT71

Gifting Xbox Points was something that happened quite a while ago although I believe the service has since been withdrawn (maybe as it allowed people who'd hacked an account to syphon 'real' money onto another account?)

See here for details from Dec 2007: http://xbox.joystiq.com/2007/12/24/microsoft-points-are-now-giftable/

BTW if you read the previous post on this blog, while the Xbox team are trying to get it done sooner, it sounds like the downtime could well be a full 24hrs. Click http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?day=17&month=6&year=2009&hour=0&min=1&sec=0&p1=234 to see when the end of that 24hrs is in your region.

To 'NEED XBL!'  The blogs are informative, your comment was not.

E, can you tell me if this is the case why does streaming video's using WMP11 require you to have a working Xbox Live connection.  As we all know, the windows media extender is useless for Divx or Xvid.

There is no reason why you cannot watch these files offline.

We have 4x Xbox 360's one on each TV in our house and use an Dell XPS 420 with Windows 7 7100 64-bit and ATI HD USB Cable Cards. Guess how many times we've sent them to get serviced. Hint it's more than once per xbox. We're good at fixing them ourselves now!

Opps is right, my wife has been bitching for hours now because the kids and her can't watch any tv or play any games. The Wii works, stupid 480peace of crap!

This sounds like an Obama stop being a fat ass project.

Why would you punish/opps the people that are testing your products and trying to fix your Vista trashed name? It's not like I spent the last 30 hours fixing a crashed Master role holding DC your patches corrupted and just wanted to watch some HD TV.

NO MORE OPPS'ES!!!!!!! You might as well just rename your team to the "homers house of horrors!"

Hey 'e' - I tried to sign in to XBL got a error message saying that my router didn't have it's MTU set to the minimum - is this Microsoft's technique for disallowing XBL access while it's down? - coz it's a bit of a misleading way of doing it IMHO. Please comment/reply. Thanks.

I can't Xbox live is down!

I kid you not, 5 second after I hit Submit my HP Tablet with Windows 7 when black and full shut off.

No warning for low battery in High performance profile? Someone's slacking!

Maybe they should ask the IE8 team for help my last website tabs came right back up after I plugged in and rebooted. Oh, wait IE8 is faster in XP SP3 not W7 don't ask them for help we might get W7ME.

Don't blame me for the crap I fling you banned me from my freakin TV.

# CyberAxe said on June 16, 2009 8:49 PM:

@dotRedcoat

Hey my wife spent an hour and half this morning rebooting and running the diags because of that MTU error before you saw the Xbox Live Offline in the status next to the error and remembered it was coming up.

But I agree thats a poor way to say we're not home right now or we're sitting on the pot.

Question - When can we have our profiles on more than one system at a time. Face rec will suck if you have to move a memory card around. Why not Mesh the 360 profiles including WinLive.

# Leyvin said on June 16, 2009 8:57 PM:

Gifting Microsoft Points is faily pointless when you could simply purchase an MSP (Live/Zune) Card from most places now and just tell your friends the code for it.

Anywho, think those bitching and whining about how long these maintainance days have never worked around complex network systems before. It's not a simple case of turning off the machine, leaving it to cool and running scandisk like your desktop (not that I bet half of you even do that) there is no doubt a hellova lot of work that needs to be done in a very short amount of time.

I agree the download is frustrating from a gamer perspective, but it is necessary evil sometime just to keep a service like Live as stable as it is.

Well only another 6hours left guys ^_^ trust you to do a 24hour Maintainance the day I finally replace my router to get my Xbox back online properly hehe

At least it's not this bad! Can't you guys build this in modules and replace or add on modules to the system. Seems odd to take everything down for days to update or replace code.

Are you moving the xbox live network to W2k8 V-hyper and virtual systems? And how will Ondemand ever work when I can't even watch an ad without having to wait and buffer, wait and buffer.........buffer......

I've tried everything! Gigabyte, new router, new cable, upped my Cable to 15MB/1MB and still....wait please .....buffering.....buffering...

netflix I get maybe second bar of quality which on a 65" tv sucks really really sucks!

I don't know what the hell room your in but I just spent 30 hours rebuilding a Master Role holding AD PDC after a windows update/reboot corrupted my SID DB and a microsoft support engineer in india killed my Explorer.exe and left me in task manager file/run for 2.5 hours making me have to regedit my way out until I promond to HKey heaven and secured a lanmanNT while fixing a dead SID or two. Sieged a few roles around the Directory and made some killings of NS around the BDC's. But I had some help from my friend DFS and a little RSOP.

I can't say anything for the rest of the room but I think I've earn the right to say up your SID hole and show some respect.

Wonder why MS doesn't have a backup server farm to prevent service disruptions like this during  "maintenance" events.

I work in server ops and can't imagine any standard mtce taking so long.  Patches and fixes are always pre-tested thoroughly and pushed out to production machines through the network.  Must be some kind of major upgrade to keep offline this long.

I can't even put my CD-KEY from my Media Center TV Pack 2008 in to my Laptop.

They didn't know or plan for Windows 7 Media Centers to go down too. With more than 4 million downloads you'd think they'd thought about this.

I'd call that an opps.

My 360 works as a media centre extender to my bedroom, I use it to extend my TV signal from my TV room. As XBOX live is down I can not launch MCE on my 360, this is rather annoying. Why can't MS release an update patch for W7RC that removes the requirement for a connection to XBOX live?

PS W7RC rocks, I will definitely purchace licenced copies when it is released (if the XBOX Live bug is fixed before I give up and revert to kak vista...)

# Roddarockker said on June 17, 2009 2:19 AM:

Dudes. You are testing Beta Software. Stop complaining about downtimes of your extender connection and the like. You shouldn't be installing Windows 7 if your going to behave like that.

# CyberAxe said on June 17, 2009 2:47 AM:

#Roddarockker

Man you're complaining about complainers.

Oh really. I didn't know Windows 7 was a beta, crazy whinner I am and all.  Ofcource the Xbox Team didn't know Media Center wouldn't work without Xbox Live either so...

Funny I've spent many hours working on bugs and testing their software, you don't think our whinning is in good fun and faith they're doing their best with the Billions and Billions of dollars they get to service more than 20 million users. The largest closed network on the planet.

You don't think anyone here would wait more if they said we had to for Natal.

Caught up on our Fringe, wow crazy show, seems like something Bill gates would do.

At the same time we are the customers and we have to call it as it is. Could you image your Cable provider or your Power company said we're going to close for a day. Given this will be happening in CA in t-50 days but thats their problem.

CA I bet Obama can fix that for you, maybe Obama can fix Xbox Live too.

# LynYo said on June 17, 2009 2:57 AM:

I totally aggree with Noddy-RSA, W7RC is way cool, but it is damn annoying that when you are Beta testing you don't get to watch your fav shows, 'cause Media Centre must have that connection to X-box Live. It sucks. Basta!

# Noddy-RSA said on June 17, 2009 3:23 AM:

@Roddarockker

I realise that I am using release candidate software (ie not really beta anymore) I am just commenting that I swapped Vista HU for RC7 and I am really impressed with W7, but I can't stop feeling abused when a different service (XBOX LIVE) is down for 24 hours and that service ruins my W7RC experience. I maintian that this should be patchable with a registry entry somewhere that we could apply to remove the LIVE (or should say dead) link.

All in all I am super impressed with W7 and I am considering moving my gaming rig to W7 soon too...

PS for all the grumpies that had harsh things to say in theis forum I aggree with Roddarockker - it is still a free copy...
