Marketplace Issues Update

As e stated, we are tracking and in the process of resolving an interesting issue around Marketplace.  As a part of the work we did yesterday, there were some updates to the tools we use to load content onto the service, and there are some unexpected failures with those new tools that affect new content added to the service in the previous 12-24 hours leading up to the downtime.  That is the only issue of significance we are tracking at this time.

The feedback around issues on this forum has really helped – please keep the feedback coming.

When the issue is resolved with the new pieces of content, and you are attempting to re-download, please be advised if it appears that you are being charged again, you aren’t.  You can click straight through the messages without being charged.  We have stepped through this ourselves, we know the experience is poor, and are working to see what we can do about it.

For those who offered critical feedback on our performance yesterday, and the fact that this marketplace content issue got by us, I understand and appreciate what you are saying.  Its our job to be flawless, and we clearly didn’t meet the bar yesterday.  I am incredibly proud of the teams for the work that was done, and how hard folks worked to get us where they did – I also appreciate that we work on a service with a demanding customer base; it is as it should be.  I love that part of it.  Please have faith that we are trying really really hard, and are making improvements as fast as we can.

If you are having any other issues, please post.  Thanks again.

Hey guys - top notch! Thanks for letting us know - I was getting worried about my Burnout Paradise messing up when I couldn't download Big Surf Island. Thanks anyway :D

# John said on June 17, 2009 6:20 PM:

So no eta??  How bought you just focus on getting us sam and max.

# NightStalker said on June 17, 2009 6:25 PM:

I'm unable to compare achievements and gamerscore properly through xbox.com

Something is wrong with the website on the end.

More importantly, one of your backbone community sites - TrueAchievements.com has been unable to compare achievements properly because of this, and are blocked out of your site.

# Tom said on June 17, 2009 6:25 PM:

what's the estimated time to really launch the new XBLA games?

# SJB said on June 17, 2009 6:26 PM:

have to wonder why you would schedule such a big maintenance task so close to the standard arcade wednesday releases.

# jim said on June 17, 2009 6:28 PM:

It's nice to know you're trying really hard, but do you have any idea how much longer it will take?

# Faustous said on June 17, 2009 6:28 PM:

And this is why I love MS. You wouldn't get this much information with this much return love from other console companies!

Thanks!

... but hurry the hell up! :)

# Shamrock said on June 17, 2009 6:29 PM:

I'm actually glad you didn't find the MP bugs.  It probably would of delayed live going online.   I"m just fine with you guys fixing this while the rest of live is up and running.

# Jim said on June 17, 2009 6:31 PM:

This is unrelated to the current problems, but is there any chance XBL features that were removed with the NXE update will come back?  For example, the ability to auto-download XBLA games, and the ability to recommend games to friends.

# jim said on June 17, 2009 6:33 PM:

Shamrock: Right, as badly as I want to try the new XBLA games and Rock Band songs, at least I can watch a Netflix movie right now.  Yesterday was torture.

# Whatever said on June 17, 2009 6:40 PM:

Its been nearly 40 hours now, and you can't even give us an ETA?!  And all you need to do is adjust the way the files are indexed/stored so that the downloads work?  What the HECK have you guys been doing with your time?!?  Seriously, this is just pathetic.

# That GUy said on June 17, 2009 6:45 PM:

Whatever: Do you have any idea what it takes to diagnose and repair issues that appear on software as large as Xbox Live? It's not like your CS 1 class where you quickly stomp out a stupid mistake you made.

Fixes to something like Live take a lot of effort, especially in the regression testing and deployment area.

# who said on June 17, 2009 6:55 PM:

was the DLC for Arkanoid Live! added within the past 24-48 hrs? That's not working either...

# TED TUTNER said on June 17, 2009 7:00 PM:

THANKS FOR THE INFO, PLEASE GET BURNOUT PARADISE BIG SURF ISLAND BACK ON THE MARKETPLACE!

# CM said on June 17, 2009 7:00 PM:

The main issue I had was with 12+ hours of no updates and the status site mentioning ONLY 1 vs 100.  Someone should have updated well before that time.  If there are known issues, shouldn't they be posted here, Major N's, twitter, the status site, and the Marketplace itself?

# moseph said on June 17, 2009 7:03 PM:

seriously an ETA would be nice

# PropB said on June 17, 2009 7:05 PM:

The Sega DLC from last week is missing, which means your issues goes back further than 24 hours before downtime...

# who said on June 17, 2009 7:05 PM:

ETA: Within the next 24 hours give or take 6 or 7 days or so...

# kurosawasghost said on June 17, 2009 7:06 PM:

unless its fixed now its not just the past 24 hours....the arcade games from last week (altered beast, etc) were not available either....

# ChainsawNinja80 said on June 17, 2009 7:07 PM:

What about the Sega Vintage Collection?  They seem to have disappeared from the Marketplace...

# Whatever said on June 17, 2009 7:08 PM:

I agree with CM.  The biggest disgrace here has to be the complete lack of communication.  Over 10 hours without anyone at MS posting anything about the problem - Outrageous.  Do you guys even know how to spell "customer service"?  And after 40+ hours of down time, you still don't post an ETA?  Come on, guys.  Professionals don't pull junk like that.

# FireE said on June 17, 2009 7:13 PM:

Just out of curiosity, do you guys have performance reviews?  Does this stuff go in them?  Is there any personally penalty for performing badly?  I mean, I  understand the complexity here but I fail to understand why not once has it gone properly.  How many more nonchalant, mea-cupla posts do you get before heads start to roll?

# One Day Off A Week said on June 17, 2009 7:15 PM:

I'm so glad I got to spend my day this week waiting my ass off.

# BFBeast666 said on June 17, 2009 7:22 PM:

Hey, I'm as anxious to get my grubby paws on MTG as the next guy, but some people here are overdoing the hate. Chill out, people.

# Shawn said on June 17, 2009 7:27 PM:

The Iron Maiden songs released last week are not being shown as able to be downloaded individually. On marketplace or in the Rock Band store.

# re: one day off a week said on June 17, 2009 7:33 PM:

u can say that, ive been waiting for rocket riot for this whole day got a 9/10 http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1719/Rocket-Riot/p1/ and microsoft is probably scratching their nuts instead of acting like professionals.I did my part of the job and studied for 3 hours for my portuguese nacional exams, and hoping u guys fixed this. u guys had plenty of time to know that the maintenance could have issues, and at least be prepared for the same. now i have to wait my ass off like  one day off a week said just to get a game. i hope this will at least fix the freezing issues on the xbox 360 dashboard or much people will get dissapointed at you guys. No offense, but you do not have any proof that you guys are working and we dont even know an ETA?This means that probably it will take like 5 days or sumthin?Seriously this is a joke.

# CoolJosh3k said on June 17, 2009 7:35 PM:

Is it me or is it hot in here? Enough flames.

Cool your jets people;

if you want to complian about customer service and support this isn't the place (try calling 1800 4MYBOX or visiting the forums at xbox.com).

# Guy said on June 17, 2009 7:35 PM:

They probably have to take off any affected content and load it back onto the servers and test it all. Even if it is only content released over the past few days it will take some time...

That being said, the  Xbox live service (paid or free) doesn't come with a service level guarantee. They are working as hard as they can and overall they do a great job. Give 'em a rest.

# Jim said on June 17, 2009 7:35 PM:

Is 1 vs 100 also not working?  It's supposedly "on now" but I can't download it.

# Miguel said on June 17, 2009 7:36 PM:

You know things are bad when the system status page doesn't load correctly!

Please at least acknowledge that the new xbox.com interface is still not up to a functional level, and ease our concerns by telling us you're working on it.

# Cody said on June 17, 2009 7:39 PM:

I cannot download 1 vs 100 at all. Been trying all day long.

# X Crater said on June 17, 2009 7:40 PM:

My Xbox's colors are messed up, after playing for 5 minutes things start losing their color or are displayed in the wrong color. Even the NXE dashboard is messed kinda looks like a 256 color game with green bands instead of shadows. Would this be because of the update or just my Xbox nearing the end?

# Rick said on June 17, 2009 7:41 PM:

1 vs 100 is working just took a couple times to connect.

# Scoob said on June 17, 2009 7:45 PM:

.....Monkeys!

# Strongparm said on June 17, 2009 7:48 PM:

I appreciate the hard work by the MS team to address the marketplace issues, It sounds like it's been a long day.  Thank you.

I hope people still remember to give Rocket Riot a try when the marketplace is back on line!

# SkyCube said on June 17, 2009 7:57 PM:

Appreciate you guys are looking into it. I admit i am pretty bummed, but am glad to hear you guys make some statements.  Just a thought, for your next Service Maintenance maybe schedule it so it's not prior to a big DLC or Arcade Release day. This way you guys have less issues/bugs to hammer out or worry about.

# fleshribbon said on June 17, 2009 7:58 PM:

On xbox.com I'm still unable see my friends or other peoples achievements.  When you click on a game it just shows your achievements and no longer the side by side comparison of the other person and your achievements.

# Cindy Adams said on June 17, 2009 8:05 PM:

Where is the Cega Vintage collection! Please bring it back!!

# Ship said on June 17, 2009 8:12 PM:

Wait wait, so I need to purchase more points(to put on my account) just so I can go through the menu and get it to recognize that I've already paid for this game. Well that's great considering I don't want to purchase another 1000MS just so I can access the game I already paid for. Awesome, just awesome.

Just got on to see if it'd been fixed and MTG isn't recognizing that I paid for the game earlier. And since MS doesn't send receipts of game purchases to my email I guess they can just claim that I never bought it. Score.

# ocrapitsmatt said on June 17, 2009 8:13 PM:

cant you guys just bypass the tools and manually upload content so paying customers can download it?  ive been wanting to play duels of the planewalkers all day

# Nadroj said on June 17, 2009 8:26 PM:

For a payed-service this just sucks. No excuse.

I've been charged for a game I wasn't able to download and I have been unable to use live for two days.

PSN may not be as content rich, but at least it never breaks.

# Justin said on June 17, 2009 8:27 PM:

integrations bugs are inevitable especially with an upgrade as large as a 24 hour downtime would imply.  It's unfortunate that it affects a vital user experience component, but it's the nature of the beast.  I'm not always an MS fan, but I can hardly blame them for a minor hiccup once in a while.

I've waited months for M:TG to be available, I can wait a few more hours.  Everyone else would do well to consider that you definitely would not do a better job than them, no matter how well they are paid.

# Veive257 said on June 17, 2009 8:28 PM:

Just noticed that I can't view friend's achievements with the new xbox.com.  Was this done on purpose?  Are achievements private now?

# Justin said on June 17, 2009 8:29 PM:

As an owner of a PS3, a Wii and an Xbox-360, I can confirm that such problems have happened for each system.  As a former Sony fan boy, it pains me to admit that Microsoft's Live service is by far the smoothest experience.

# Liam said on June 17, 2009 8:30 PM:

The funny thing is that I haven't touched my 360 in over a month. Then MTG comes out and I can't download it due to this fiasco. The one time I want to use it for something, I can't. Oh well, time to go see how bad America's Army 3 is.

# Mark said on June 17, 2009 8:44 PM:

Those that were critical of you good people yesterday - obviously have never gone beyond typing on a computer.  You guys did an AWESOME job - of course, there may be some 'undocumented negative enhancement features', but that is to be expected sometimes with a system that is probably as complex as XBL.  So KUDOS, to the entire XBL Team - you guys did GREAT - and there are many of us who appreciated your hard work.  Now on to the FALL!!!!

# Mike said on June 17, 2009 8:45 PM:

What, do you people have no lives? So you can't play magic... go outside, read a book, play a sport, take up a musical instrument, take out your cards and actually play magic.  What is the point of sitting on here bitching about it?  Don't give me the "I'm paying for it i expect better" argument or the "PSN doesn't have these problems" argument because you know what, it's bullshit.  PSN is a horribly structured network, you would know this if you understood network architecture.  You really have no concept of the scale of the Live network, this isn't a little FTP server or Torrent Tracker(though I have no doubt it uses those technologies), this is a full sized, many thousands of servers, many thousands of applications network.  When rolling out a patch, update, content or even a simple maintainable there are procedures, not following those procedures could result in an even more broken network.  Let the people do their job.

If you reply to this message, don't expect a reply back, I'm going out, I'll see if I can download Magic and Sam and Max tomorrow, if not, well, it's a good excuse to do some housecleaning

# Slickman Elite said on June 17, 2009 8:46 PM:

The optional media update for streaming certain videos to the XBOX 360 is down as well. Please try and get it back up ASAP.

# Keymaster said on June 17, 2009 8:53 PM:

I'm assuming at this point we're not going to hear anything until these guys are back at work tomorrow, or if we do get word it will be that MS is giving these games a June 18 release date... And seriously? Still no official word from MS?  You think we're all frustrated?  Imagine if you were one of these developers.

# Sacred 2 Lover said on June 17, 2009 8:58 PM:

Carrier Imp in Sacred 2 is not working since Live service was "restored".

# Justin said on June 17, 2009 9:11 PM:

Yeah! How dare you complain about not being able to play a game that you've already paid for, and has been delayed multiple times and is finally being released!

You people obviously have no lives. Surely you have no right to be disappointed about the inability to play this game - despite having looked forward to it's release for months.

# SpectralRaziel said on June 17, 2009 9:12 PM:

Stickman Elite beat me to it, Optional media update is dead.

# to all the "no lives people" said on June 17, 2009 9:17 PM:

some people over here say that we have no lives, but of course they are pissed off with microsoft too. Each people is different, example:im a big fan of games but i have been looking forward to rocket riot, but also studied today for my nacional exams of portuguese, and when i arrive...WTF I WANTS MAI ROCKET RIOT GAGAGAGA.like i said, we have no proof that they are working "really really hard".But admit people, you are pissed off too even if it is a little

I am from Germany and it is 03.20 am here. Really want to play Rocket Riot and the other games, but don't know if you are ready in 30 minutes or even in 5 hours? ... :(

Nevertherless, you're doing a great job.

I was just wondering if there's been some problems playing some games online. I tried some Gears 2 and lost connection after a bit of play then tried 1 vs 100 a couple of times and lost connection there too.

i can live with a silly euphemism like *issue* instead of the more honest *problem*, but what's with the weird use of *around*?

"issue around Marketplace"

"feedback around issues"

what's wrong with having issues *with* something and getting feedback *on* something? however, thanks for not having issues *in terms of* Marketplace. i may have lost it if you did. :)
