Microsoft XML Paper Specifications Essentials Pack v1.0 is released

Microsoft is proud to announce the release of XPS Essentials Pack v 1.0. You can download the XPS Essentials Pack from: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/xps/viewxps.mspx . XPS Essentials Pack gives you the complete experience of generating and viewing XPS Documents without the need to install .NET Framework 3.0. XPS Essentials Pack requires MSXML 6.0 to generate XPS documents.

We are glad to announce that the release version of XPS EP is supported for Vista as well as Windows XP SP2,  Windows Server 2003 for both 32 bit and 64 bit machines. XPS EP has lots of cool components like the XPS Viewer, XPSDrv printer components, shell handlers, IPreview etc.   With IPreview on Vista you can preview the documents in Windows Explorer without opening the application.

Please note that when XPS Essentials Pack is installed on Windows Vista, XPS Viewer EP does not take over as the default application for XPS files. To set it as the default application to handle XPS files, you would need to right click on any XPS file, choose “Open With. In the options choose “XPS Viewer EP” as the application and ensure that “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” box is checked.

Sorry, it's not in WM6 - that I had hoped for. The new mobile office apps does not even support the Office 2007 document formats.

But, since the XPS specs are out there, let's see who gets one done first, starting a project on CodePlex would be fun!

It's a pity that there is no support of XPS in WM6.

I hope there will be a feature pack which will bring support for XPS and the new office file format.

But I think the problem will be the huge amount of data to be processed for XML files. This could be a problem for small devices like 64mb smartphones.

But look at this link: http://weblogs.asp.net/mschwarz/archive/2007/04/18/silverlight-support-on-windows-mobile.aspx, here they talk about silverlight which also uses XML, XAML and all that.

So let's hope...

Installing the release version "Vista 32bit.msu" file on windows vista ultimate german fails. Errormessage: "The Update is not valid for your system".

How to solve this?

For a successful installation:

It' not enough to repair the MSMXML6 installation, and the .NET Framework 3.0 - via the control panel applet (add or Remove programs) in Windows XP.

My problem was the .NET Framework 3.0 - I re-installed it from the 50Mb file, which was successful, then the XPSEP installed with no problems.

How the Framework got damaged (or parts of it were removed), I don't know.

My advice: Don't install this if you already can generate and view XPS files.

I have XP SP2, IE7, .Net 3.0.  Installed this thinking I would get some additional capability.  Instead, it broke my ability to view XMS. Now IE says "can not display the web page" as if it was trying to find a web site.

Open with ..., WinFX Runtime Components now tries to intall .Net 3.0 (which is already there) and fails.

I get following error on XPsp2 during install.  Before install, I removed XPS viewer Beta. I also have fx2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 installed.

"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

How does a system administrator uninstall or prevent the XPS Document Writer from being installed as a printer?

About a quarter of our user's printers are being defaulted to the XPS printer. Even worse, there's some sort of (as of yet) unfixed bug with the XPS printer and terminal services printing. This is causing major headaches for our staff, who rely on local printing for their terminal sessions.

Is there any emergency or immediate way to disable Microsoft XPS Document Writer? Thanks.

You mentioned that if installed on Vista the XPS Reader does not take over the default file association for XPS. I am scriptomatically installing this for our Vista image, how can I make sure it is the default program?

Sounds great, however when I try to install the Essentials pack on my WinXP machine (upt to date and with MSXML 6 and .net framework3) it installs succesfully but it doesn't in staal the printer. Nothing to find about this yet, doe anyone have a hint?

Matt: Document Outline is enabled if the document was authored with an outline (in the DocumentStructure part). MS Word provides an option to export the outline when saving as XPS. Permissions apply only to Windows RMS protected documents.

I've tried the obvious stuff like restarting my PC, installing in Safe mode and looking for XPS stuff in Add/Remove programs and uninstalling it (can't see any).

Why is an "anti spam" filter rejecting my email to XPSinfo@microsoft.com? There is nothing spam like or otherwise objectionable in it. Unless you're rejecting emails containing criticism of Microsoft software.

At the end of this, we will porting the XPS to WM6. But we are not sure the market and do we have the chance to cooperate with Microsoft to pre-integrate our XPS viewer solution into WM6.0?

I can't believe I actually have to ask this: for future releases of this software can you actually make it so the damn thing doesn't self destruct?  Every time it "expires" I get really obscure dialogs or empty message boxes!  If you want people to use software, make it so it works!

Too bad the thumbnail view in the viewer works lousy.  It consumes 80%+ of the CPU to "attempt" to render an XPS document of just 2 pages until I give up.

This is on Vista Ultimate 32 bit 1.7Mhz, 2 Gig, not running in Aero with low end graphics notebook.

I just downloaded the XP SP2 msi this morning, and am having the same problem as has been reported back in June... how to fix???

If you get the "There is a problem..." error make sure you install the MSXML6 update and reboot before running the installer, and see if that helps. It did for me.

I get the same damn error: I have SQL Server 2005, .Net v1, v2, msxml6 installed. NO .Net v3.0 Everytime I try to install it gives me the "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. " error...

XPS Beta 2 for Windows 2000. Set date prior to 1 January 2007.
