Visual C++ 6.0 mainstream support will end on September 30, 2004

I still see a lot of people running VC++ 6.0 [SP3|SP4|SP5]. As of today, the status is that mainstream support will end on September 30, 2004!

Check http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[ln];LifeAn11 for more information.

Such news is only going to encourage my co-workers to want to move to Eclipse and GCC for now and Java in future... grrr.

I've been using Microsoft development products since 1997, and I don't think I've ever rung the Microsoft support line.

OK, whatever bugs are left in the product after the last service pack are there to stay, but I like to think of the "post support phase" as the "stable phase".

I don't see any reason here to switch products. Not to a non-Microsoft product just for the sake of being anti-Microsoft, and not to a newer Microsoft product just for the sake of having the latest.

You both have a point although...
Visual C++ 6.0 was released in 1998, wasn’t it? This is a 6 year old compiler. If you really like the C++ language and its power, you have a couple of reasons to upgrade to VC++ 2003. Have a look at http://msdn.microsoft.com/visualc/productinfo/topten/upgrade02.aspx
