Session Descriptions

Windows Server 2008

What’s New In Windows Server 2008

Windows Server 2008--in addition to incorporating new capabilities and enhancements to existing features--includes a number of improvements in the core OS that enhance the Operating System’s capabilities; such as features aimed at increasing the ability of Windows Server 2008 to support highly critical workloads by improving operational reliability, reducing system failures, and easing management. We will also discuss improvements in other related elements of the platform that help Windows based systems and services move an organization's IT Department forward.

Virtualization and your Infrastructure

The new Windows Server Virtualization technology, Hyper-V, and Presentation Virtualization technologies like Terminal Services RemoteApp are core features in Windows Server 2008. This session will provide you with an overview of virtualization in Windows Server 2008: the scenarios, features, and benefits that make server virtualization important. Virtualization management is becoming a critical tool for improving overall manageability for the IT environment; join us in this session to learn how Hyper-V and our management technologies build a strong flexible platform and improve overall manageability.

Securing your IT Infrastructure with Windows Server 2008

Windows Server 2008 offers rich capabilities for securing your IT Infrastructure and proving tools to ease with compliance mandates. This session will discuss the Windows security and compliance features such as Network Access Protection, Right Management Services, Active Directory Federation Service subsystem, why auditing is important and how to configure an audit policy in the updated Windows Server 2008 event subsystem.

Exploring Windows Server 2008 Web and Application Technologies

Windows Server 2008 includes Internet Information Server 7 perhaps the most important upgrade to IIS since its inception; aimed at creating a seamless environment where administrators and developers can create, maintain, and modify web assets.. We will also discuss improvements in other related elements of the web platform that help Windows based systems and services move an organization's IT Department forward.

The 2007 Microsoft Office system has evolved into a business application platform that developers can use to build and deploy Office Business Applications (OBAs), an emerging class of applications that address critical business problems. This session demonstrates how developers can use Visual Studio 2008 to build OBAs, customize Microsoft Office applications, and utilize the Microsoft Office platform to build scalable line-of-business solutions based on Microsoft Office.

Defy Occasionally Connected Challenges with Smart Client Applications

This session introduces the new features and improvements incorporated into Visual Studio 2008 for smart client development. This session also introduces new client services that allow your applications to authenticate users providing role-based UI, and be occasionally connected with offline data storage. We demonstrate how you can leverage both Windows Presentation Foundation and Windows Forms in a single application to build the right experience for your customer. Finally, we show feedback-driven improvements to existing features in Windows Forms, Windows Presentation Foundation, and ClickOnce.

Hello All!

"G2 Proto" here (SecondLife name) aka Kyle.  I am managing the event for Microsoft in SecondLife and I would like to offer help to anyone confused on getting to the Second Life Microsoft Island simulator or anything thereafter such as registering and getting acclimated to Second Life.  Email me at kyle@siliconreef.net or if you are logged into Second Life search for "Microsoft" to find a link in the Second Life client or message me.

I hope to see you all there!

Ummm "poised to make history for Microsoft by holding the first ever full-fledged Launch event in Second Life".

I hate to be the one to break it, but you're not.

Last October Sun launched the Nigara 2 class of servers on Second life, and I'm sure we were not the first to do a full fledged product launch.

It might be a first for Microsoft, but certainly not a first on Second Life.

This is not to take anything away from the fact that you are doing it, which is a wonderful thing of itself and I wish you all the best for it.

Alan.

ps: I have trouble enough speaking for myself without speaking for anyone else, let alone my employer.

For the last step, here's the easy way to do this.  Start SL and log in, then open the big Map (the "Map" button at the bottom for the newer people-- as oppposed to the Mini-Map next to it).

In the search box, below the Location box, you can manually dial in the coordinates.  Put 175 84 23 in and click "Teleport".  When you land, and everything has "rezzed" (appeared), turn around and look for the Orange Triangles, and click one.

Have a great day and see you all in SL hopefully:-)

Hey AK Scooter!

I honestly don't know.  give it a shot and let me know if you can.  when I was a *NIX guy I would use a virtual machine to run most of my windows stuff and vice versa now that I use windows.

# re: Heroes Happen Here Launch in Second Life -- April 26th, 2008

Hey Alan Hargreaves  :)

Sorry for the late reply to your post but we have been pretty busy lately.

Everyone who reads my blog knows I’m a no BS kinda guy so it looks like the verbiage I used was confusing.  I want to set the record straight, of course:  We are setting Microsoft history not Second Life history.  There have been plenty of launches for products on Second Life.  Actually, there have been launches for Microsoft products as well but there has never, in Microsoft's history, been an all-day event with three full tracks in Second Life.  This is what I am most proud of.

Also, I should point out that Second Life doesn’t run on Microsoft products.  I feel particularly proud that Microsoft was willing to give me the resources to build a community in this type of environment.  I am doubly proud that the Microsoft User Group Island is 100% built by the community and its leaders.  Microsoft did not hire an outside company to build it nor did any of its employees build it for the simple reason that we feel the community should control the island.  The only thing we have done is provide money and the island to the community leads so they can see their visions realized.  I think even IBM and Sun haven’t had an entire sim built and maintained 100% by the community.  Slap me around if I am mistaken here Alan 

I think currently Second Life doesn’t run on Sun’s hardware and software either so I applaud your efforts in an environment that doesn’t use your products.  If there is a Sun equivalent of me over there have them send a friend request to CSharp Writer so we can talk about doing stuff together.  I am all about having a group hug with you guys in Second Life and would be happy to share insights with each other.

See you at the launch!

Absolutely, which is why I ended what I said so positively. It's good to see you folks participating.

Have fun and good luck!

Alan.

Special Note:  While I am in "updating my blog" mode, I wanted to make sure that folks didn't get the wrong impression from my conversation with Alan Hargreaves earlier in this thread.  He is absolutely a very cool guy and we synched up briefly during the launch where i got plugged into the Sun equivalent of me in Second Life:  Fiona.

I plan to have talks with her to see if there is something that Microsoft and Sun can do together inworld.  We will see what shakes out but I think there is some definite possibilities there.
