Targeting SP1 in Your Applications...

It may come as a surprise to you but you actually can't target 3.5 SP1 in your applications from the drop down list for Mulit-targeting.  However, it WILL be "automagically" selected when you choose a dependency that requires it.  Want to find out more?  Check out these links:

Actually that's not actually true. You can 'automagically' target 3.5 SP1 in your application, simple by taking a depedency on a an API new for the service pack. See: http://davesbox.com/archive/2008/08/25/new-for-visual-studio-2008-sp1-and-fxcop-1-36-multi-targeting-rule.aspx for more information.

Yep you are correct David :)

I guess what I should have said is that you can't select it from the drop down list.  Correction made.

so then it's safe to assume that if you're not using any sp1 functionality, then you should be able to develop on a box running sp1 and deploy on a server not running sp1 and everything works correctly right?

Based on what I know that would be a safe assumption...
