    Discovering a lost classic

I have been reading The Man in the Iron Mask this past week. It is the final volume in the Three Musketeers series of books. The book has been extremely exciting to read. Whereas I had seen the Three Musketeers Movie, and therefore was familiar with the basic plot outlines, I knew nothing about the Iron Mask book. Every page has been a new revelation, a new adventure, and something I was dying to find out how it would end. I actually prefer to read a book in a single sitting—if at all possible, because it makes the book more enjoyable, and it allows me to get into the world that is created by the author in a more complete fashion. Of course, there are practical things such as work, and life in general that can interfere with the goal of single sitting book consumption. With The Man in the Iron...

Carl Chatfield: Quality, the Project Triangle and "Fit for purpose"

Carl here. Recently I had the opportunity to share a model called the "triangle of triple-constraints" or more simply the "project triangle" with some bright people I know. This is a model familiar to many project managers, and I have found it's a useful framing tool when discussing that elusive notion of "quality." Triangulating on an idea I wrote an appendix called "A Short Course in Project Management" for the 2000 edition of the Project Step by Step, and we've kept it in the subsequent editions with minor changes. You can find the excerpted appendix here on Office Online . You can also read the "Project Management Triangle" section of this Wikipedia entry . Very briefly, the project triangle model as a way of visualizing the three critical ingredients of a given project: time, cost and...

    You Gotta Errata?

Kimberly Kim, book-survey-data-obsessed managing editor, here. I’m reading through the comments from the past quarter’s book surveys. Several folks mentioned they want a place they can go to view or submit any errors that might sneak their way into our books. Guess what! That place exists. Each Microsoft Press book has an errata page on http://microsoftpress.oreilly.com/ . On the errata page for an individual title, you’ll find a list of errors and their corrections that were found after the book was released. If you’ve stumbled on an error that is not already listed, you can submit your own errata from this page. The quickest way to find the errata page for your book is to go to http://microsoftpress.oreilly.com/ and type the ISBN code (located above the barcode on the back cover of your book...

William Stanek: Group Policy Preferences consolidated info

William here. Earlier this year and last year, I wrote quite a few posts for the Microsoft Press blog. Readers have been writing in to ask me if I could make those posts available in a more portable form. I thought about this for a while as I had wanted to use the materials in a book. In the meantime, however, I also thought: hey, why not give the materials away to readers too. So here is the first recap , consolidating my posts about Group Policy Preferences as a PDF. Read it, print it, share it as you will! Thanks for reading, and IU hope you’ll read my new books: SQL Server 2008 Administrator’s Pocket Consultant, Second Edition and Exchange Server 2010 Administrator’s Pocket Consultant . William R.
